#86577, "Targa Top w/Sunroof"

I'm going to be doing a custom targa top for my car, but I want to keep my sunroof, so I need a way to connect the wires when the top is in, so how would you guys do this? I'm guessing just contacts on the targa top, and on the car, that when the roof goes in, they touch...

Sound good to you guys?

Thanks

put on your flame suit for this one but...

i wouldent recommend contacts. your car will probably be flexing, and not to mention the contacts will get nasty. id just put a male and female connector on all the wires and just plug/unplug it when needed. you might read up on all the targe top conversion threads.

EDIT: and no, its not gonna sound good to anyone. hope you plan on going all show, beause without a 16pt roll cage...your gonna be twistin and flexin all over the road.

rebuild your car as a complete tube chassis where the roof isn't a stressed memeber and then go for it. it would cost about the same as a proper targa top conversion, handle (and ride) like a Viper, and make your car almost as impractical.

wtf? call what? It was an original idea (to me) until i saw someone had already done it. I had been thinkin about doing it for a month before I ever saw it on someones car.

Anyways, I did not know that with a good roll cage that it would still be flexin...

Don't waste your money. It will cost you a fortune to do it right and then you still won't be able to drive it.

Ok, I didn't search, I have not been on my computer much... I never saw this: http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=7&topic_id=86515&mesg_id=86515&listing_type=search

Anyways, Spyders do it, therefor there HAS to be a way to do it. My car is completely stripped right now, in and out, so now is the time to do it, and I am willing to put plenty of time and money into it...

So, a little help, instead of discouragement would be nice. But I got my answer for the actual question so I can't complain too much... but does anybody have any tips?

I'm going to do it... so if you say it can't be done... just don't bother.

Thanks

Spyders and coupes are completely different. Spyders are designed to not have a roof therefore they have all the necessary bracing throughout the car.

Thank you Captian Obvious.

Now, how do I make the coupe braced as well as a spyder?

Well, since I don't want anymore kids, I bet both of my nuts. emoji Well, it's not impossible, but when you show people, they'll be like, "why the hell did you waste so much time and money to do only that one thing?" But, Just buy a Spyder and put it on that if you REALLY want to do it, my nuts are on the line here.

the reason people discourage it is because we know better. we arent trying to be assholes...and we arent saying "its too hard" were saying what your asking to do is impractical in every sense of the word. why? you have a sunroof. your car as a hardtop is designed to have that section of the roof firmly in place. you cant just hack a section of it out and expect everything to be ok. and yes, even with all the roll cage and supports...its still gonna be greatly reduced on streetability.

and dont snap off at people (about the spyder) when they try and tell you something. its not like there are a couple parts missing on the hardtops that are welded in on the spyders. if you knew anything, youd know that they CHASSIS are different!

to tell you the truth...its not that origional. and its only a question that new people ask really...and those who do it...are quickly sorry that they did. most you see up for sale in a few months or a year. its the same reason why we discourage transplating a 4g63 into a NT eclipse. sure...you can do it...but why? you can go out and buy a car with that option. you want a targa top? buy a supra or vette. it will be cheaper, easier, and DRIVABLE.

try this. take an empty alum can and turn it sideways. put an end in each palm. now lightly try to flex and twist it. now, still holding it sideways...cut out about a 2" wide by 2" long, by 1" deep of material. now try and lightly twist and flex it. you no longer have the rigidity there that you once had. its gonna twist and flex all day long. regardless if you brace it all up...its STILL gonna flex.

I do know they are a different... and I don't know why you guys are treating me like I'm new here... the idea was original to me... i thought of it myself... I had never heard of it done, orv seen it, or anything... though I now know that it isn't an actual original idea. I didn't snap off about the spyder... atleast I didn't mean for it to sound that way. I'm asking for help on what I would have to do to make it work... seriously... if after I see what has to be done to MY CURRENT CAR to make it work, I don't want to do it, then ok, but just saying "YOUR A FREAKIN IDIOT YOU BANME!! YOU CAN'T DO IT" isn't going to help me any.

the reason we tend to get pissy on the subject...is becaue it comes up over and over and over and over and over (get my point yet?). its been discussed through its entirety. its not feasable, its not smart, youll regret it. we go through this every time. "i know how to make it work, and i will, and yall know nothing."

"you cant do it isnt gonna help me any" no...not necessarily, but what were trying to do is save you THOUSANDS of dollars and alot of trouble for something that quite frankly...is worthless. you take a perfectly good car and render it USELESS. thats all you do. we would rather see you invest that money (if its burning that big of a hole in your pocket) into sometihng youll enjoy and get a use out of....and hopefully not butcher up another eclipse.

Why would I "waste" so much time on it?

Answer: I really really like it, and it will be one of the main reasons I get sponsored... I've already talked to a company out of Tulsa, and told them everything I was wanting to do, and the main thing that will get me sponsored by them is the targa top, because there aren't hardly any.

So, I guess I'll do without you guys' help and then show it to you when I'm done. I hope I get it done anyways... if not, I'll say you all were right... but I doubt that's going to be the case... I might... repeat, might, do the spyder conversion idea... but if I can add the support into my car for less than the $4000 it would take to get a spyder, than im going to...

I'll keep you guys posted.

dude, nobody fucking said you cant do it. so dont think your gonna come back here and prove us wrong. i can go find maybe 4-6 people who have them. your not the first, and you wont be the last. what we are saying...is unless your car is gonna be a trailer bitch show car....if you wanna have any REAL drivability...then its not a good mod. we here at 2gnt are about performance and feasability. while there are some show stopping rides here...we tend to stray away from the outrageous show mods...and tend to focus on more power and putting that to the ground. one person that comes to mind with one of the nicest eclipses i know of is "aggression". he has a damn nice car, and power to back it up and he does plenty fine at shows. he can kick ass at the shows..and kick a little ass on the street. the fact of the matter is....its still a car. and we dsm'ers love to drive our cars...so your not gonna get much support on mods that will leave your car crippled forever..only to rot away in some junk yard when you get tired of it, because nobody wants a butchered car.

nobody is saying it cant be done. you saw yourself there are eclipse that are targa topped. what were saying, is its not feasable. sure, you can do a targa top, drop a V12 in the trunk and convert to rwd, and run a 10,000W stereo system adn get sponsored by every major company. you COULD. but the way we see it....is your gonna be paying aobut $10,000 just to fuck you your ride...to be "different". not only are you paying money for this...but your paying for it with your car as well.

and BTW, i have seen pics of targa top eclipses with the sunroof....so even that part of the "origionality" factor is gone.

I know it's not going to be totally original, but there aren't many out there. I have never seen one in person. I do not want to do it where it cripples my car at all, so I might have to get a spyder, but I guess we'll see... i dont know... i might just say screw it, if it's gonna be too much work... i guess i have to figure out how bad i really want it.

I would invest money into other things than this idea, as hot as it would be I really dont see the point in wasting the money on something like this. The car would look incredibly tacky with all the support and extra weight you would have to install through out the car to eliminate all the twist and body roll. It's just not worth it to me to basically total a car for something like this.. And yes, it would total your car because this is a bunch of work being done to the frame. Good luck with it though if you decide to go for it, but like everyone has put their .02 cents forward it's not the wisest thing to do to our cars.

you yourself keep saying how its not done very much and you don't see a lot of them....have you stopped and asked yourself "why"? there's a reason, many infact, why you have never seen one and the most anyone else has ever seen is only 3-4... its not a secret "mod" that just hasen't been "discovered" buy the masses yet...
theres a reason you have never seen one and others have only seen 3-4.
think about it.

after seeing pics of it done, the more logical reasoning behind this idea would be as stated above....

find a spyder and weld a coupe roof on and custom fab a targa top. it'll take alot to get everything lined up with the windshield and windows, but itd be cheaper... spyders are meant to not have a top, so u wouldnt have to worry about chassis flex. of course, hopefully u put some serious hp behind it, because with all that added weight (ur gonna be looking proly around 3200-3400lbs) ur gonna be slooooow lol.

been awhile.

even the spyder idea is gonna be somewhat of a bitch. remember, the spyder is not a hatchback like the hardtops...its got a trunk and trunk lid. i havent ever seen the trunk area of a spyder, but just thinking about a few things. youll need to also get a hatch, seals, modify the trunk to accept the hatch, get side windows installed. and then of course weld in the roof section. your gonna need to buy a spyder, and somehow get the parts youll need from a hardtop. not sure if a junkyard is gonna let you hack off the roof section...some are pretty particular on what you can and cant take. and also, im not sure about the differenc..but i know spyder a-pillars and hardtop a-pillars are not quite the same.

here are just a few things youll need that i can think of right off hand.

roof section
headliner
extended b-pillar
hatch
hatch glass
hatch hinges
rear windows
rear window trim

things youll need to do:

modify or get rid of trunk
remove motors and cloth top
weld on roof section (id reccomend a small roll cage...i sure wouldent want that crumpling on me...and it will be lacking much of the support)
find a way to modify everything to use the hatch
modify or replace trim panels (mainly rear) for new hard top

but yes, your right, you wont have the flex problem. if you get the NT you will have the 4g64....but then you could swap in a 4g63 head, turbocharge it..and have a 2.4 turbo. it would be drivable...and THAT would be origional....convering a spyder to targa tops. but again, you gotta ask yourself how feasable this is. you could probably buy a supra with targa tops...and do some BPU upgrades with money left over...and be so far ahead of your eclipe in several ways. but at least your heading in the right direction with the spyder...at least it will be safe and usable

i think a more exciting (and origional)conversion mod would be to make a hard top for a spyder.
