I know this is prob a really stupid quetion, but is there any way to smooth out the Vinyl top part of power door skins? I was wanting 2 sand everything smooth & paint w/ exterior paint and am also a lil concerned on colormatching.
I already did the spray paint thing about 3 years ago now & it worked out real well, but it didn't last forever. Kinda wanted something that'd last alot longer & figure enamel was the way to go. Interested 2 know what you guys think!

Maybe you can try recovering it with smoother material? Otherwise I don't think you can smooth it out. Sorry I can't be of more help, but good luck with your endeavers.

yea vinyl is a tough thing to have last with paint on it. It is very receptible to heat and cold and flexs alot making it hard to keep a quality long lasting finish. Especially right next to window. I would remove it and glass it smooth building the edges where it meets and would maybe have low spots and keeping it flowing nice on the door skin. Then primer and paint. Its also tough to make sure any oils trapped deep in the vinyl don't come out later on in the heat.

It's not just the center triangle, it's the top 1/2 of the door panel! So U're saying to reupholster both the insert & the top 1/2? HMmmmmmmmmmm, that'd be one tough cookie so to speak. Fabric selection would winde up B'ing very important 4 sure. HMmmmmmmm...
I thought you use the vinyl paint/dye to do the vinyl as opposed 2 reg spray paint. So I'd like to think that it'd stick, although I understand what U're saying about any oil or grease deep inside.

you could try painting it but with the sun hitting it and/or the heat build up coming in the next few months I wouldn't be surprised if it even got all gummy ( seeing how vinyle tends to heat up quit nice in sunlight) I would recomend recovering it either way.
