Okay, im going to start soon to try to make some fiberglass door panels. and i have 2 understandings of 2 ways to make them, correct me if your wrong or if you have any better idea's.

1- get the white foam stuff from a craft store, trace the door panel outline on cardboard, cut the coardboard, then glue the foam to the door panel. then use a knife and like wire grater to shape the panel out of the foam. then lay 3/4 oz or 1.3oz matting down and put resin over it and then pull the mold off of the foam.

2- put alot of vaseline over the door panel, lay 3/4oz or 1.3oz matting over the actual panel, then apply the resin and pull off the mold. it would then be slightly bigger, so then cut it down the middle in a straight line, take a 1/8" off, and mold the 2 pieces back together.

any advice or better ideas are HIGHLY welcome here.

thanks in advance.

mike

the vaseline thing is crazy and stupid. i would put tape on it, then glass it, the take the mold off and take the tape, so you have mold AND good panels. you could also put tape and tinfoil on it. id love to see the results!

Or what you could do is take an RS door panels since its all plastic and just sand it down and mold out the door crank and mold in the power switches and just have it sprayed with a thick primer and shot with car paint and clear. Waaaalaaaa! You would never tell the difference.

I have seen them done like that and it looks really good.

no i dont wanna do the rs panel thing because im molding speaker rings into the door which i would have to mold into the door panel which for a little more time, i could make a whole mold of the panel. doesnt resin stick to masking tape? i think resin peels off of duck tape though. i could lay down masking tape over the panel to keep it in good condition and then duck tape over that then lay the matting down and then resin and make the mold. only problem i run into there, is again, its bigger than the atcual panel and its not going to fit correctly .....? any ideas on that and the idea above. ya i knew the vaseline thing was out of control! lol
