Ok well, couple of months ago I pulled the gauge cluster. Noticed an odd black/green? striped wire going to SOME point on the back of the gauge cluster. Is this OEM? I was thinking it might be for this shift light I've got... I just have it grounded right now... has a ring terminal on it, doesnt look oem.

There are three large connectors, they all seem to be in place/where theyre supposed to be, just this one "extra" line isn't back where it was... But .. the tach basically like... worked half of the time, sometimes on the road I'd have to press down on the gauge cluster and the tach would start working all of a sudden... (then it stops working, goes back to zero)

Took it apart again today, the tach just DOESNT work period.

Speedometer/Odometer/EVERYTHING else works perfectly, just the tach is on the fritz.

Any ideas?

I had this problem too. Trace the trace on the IP that is the signal for the Tach. Then on the harness (inside the IP hole with the ip out) pull that connection out a little with your finger nail. It's not making a good contact. Try cleaning the IP side of the connection with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip.

whats IP stand for? is it one of the pickups between that rear "mother-sheet" (derivative of motherboard?) and the actual hard plastic of the tachometer housing?

I did soak the harness-connectors male/female sides down with "electrical cleaner" spray but... I didnt really give it any qtip-level cleaning

I dont have the gauge cluster out in front of me... how do i figure out which lead = tach signal?

Alright for future reference... I found that one of the little round screws on the back was loose (Probably the one that had the ring-terminal on it.)

Tightened it down gently, now... as far as I can tell the tach is working fine.

I also cleaned all the contacts with a better quality cleaner + qtips on both surfaces (male/female)

Havent driven on it yet, just started up in driveway but it looks good.
