#77234, "How to paint the center taillight?"

I've seen Eclipses with the center taillight painted the same color as the car. I have a 99 Green Eclipse GS with altezza tail lights but I don't particualrly light the center altezza piece. What products should I get to paint the old center piece (the one that had the Eclipse lettering on it, I removed the lettering already). Thanks.

What I did was get some low grit sand paper and scratch the hell out of it. Tape off the black plastic and spray it with a coat of primer, and don't use that rattle can shit. Go buy som of the good buffing primer, it's the tan stuff. Then spray a coat or two of paint and another coat or two of clear and you should be good.

what're good products for sanding, priming and painting? i'm in NJ. i've never painted anything in my car before, so i guess if i go to an autozone or car parts store i can just say "i need this this and this" and try my luck. Thanks for your response.

pay a body shop a few bucks to spray it for you? I dont generally advise paying others for labor.. but... probably best in this case.

Or you could always ditch the altezza's alltogether emoji

I have a quote from a body shop for $38 to paint that piece.

Edit: $18, the $38 is to pull a dent from the fender.

I'm getting ready to paint my car. I just got it fixed and got some altezzas from Lee "Pushin420a". I own a shop, and I can paint them for $35 each, thing is you gotta ship them to my shop in the Boston metro area and paint it and ship it back for nothing. We'll wetsand the light with a 1000 sand paper, prime it with gray primer, and shoot it with the color of your choice with PPG paint. Message me if you guys are interested. Plus we paint on eyelids, for projectors, and altezzas etc. One more thing, we also clear coat it too, so it'll shine.

I think the quality is pretty damn good for the price, a lot of people are surprised when I tell them where I got it from so I guess its pretty good, if I ever have problems I go back to them with warrenty in hand and they fix the problem...

i did mine myself, came out better than i thought. i went to the local prts store and picked up the wet variety pack sand paper, masking tape and rattle can paint (black and clear coat). cost me about 15.00. i removed the center light and masked off the letters and trimmed them with a razor blade. next i used the 300 grit sandpaper to roughen up the surface for the paint. Laid down two coats of the black and waited for it to dry (about 2 hours in the sun). went back with 400 girt and smothed out all the nicks and scratch's, used rubbing compound to remove the orange peal. Let the tail light air dry and wnet back and added 2 more coats of balck. rubbing compound to smooth everything out. then wnet and sprayed 2 coats of the clearcoat. never had a chance to smooth out the clear coat as i was running late for work. but i will get to it someday, but for right now it looks awsome.

98 GS, it's a work in progress. http://monkeywrench.mesanetworks.net
