my friend has a sprayer and i was just wondering what all must be done to paint a car? i know primer first then paint.. but we dont have a heat room . can it still be done? also doesnt the paint have to be mixed with other stuff too?

1.. wet sand car to get rid of factory orange peel.. done using a block and a squeege (to see remaining orange peel).

2. wash car NO WAX!!!

3. go over car with prep salts (PPG Acrylliclean... wax and grease remover)

4. go over the areas you are going to paint with tack cloth.

Here is where tack cloth is most important, paint the car in sections... hood, decklid, then sides... go over each section with tack cloth before spraying because it catches dust/overspray on it that will cause imperfections in the paint.

once car is primered... repeat same above step with the color. DO NOT listen to the directions in letting paint dry before clearing it... go quick on this... once you are done shooting color clean out the gun and put clear in there as fast as you can, then shoot clear...

not waiting for the paint to fully "dry" allows the base and the clear to become "one" so they bond with each other better with less chance of them peeling away from one another.


I'm just telling you what I know from when I painted my car... home-made paint jobs are cool... and low cost!!! I used PPG paint, clearcoat, and chemicals...

IMPORTANT: USE THE SAME BRAND FOR EVERYTHING!!! They are designed to work with one another... I.E. don't mix DuPont and PPG, etc together.
