I removed my entire carpet and tried to dye it with black RIT dye. It was a total pain in the ass and it only slightly made it darker. Maybe a fabric paint would work better.

I died mine black almost 2 years ago and it still looks great. Here's what i did:

Items needed:
Bleach (i used 2 gallons, i got them for 88 cents each)
Dupli-color interior fabric die (used 2 1/2 cans, $3 ea. @ Wal mart)
Heavy bristle scrub brush (wal-mart)
Hose

First i laid my carpet in my drive way, if you don't have a drive way, make sure you do it behind a garage or something, because the bleach will kill your grass. I dumped the 2 gallons of bleach as even as possible over the carpet and let it sit for a few hours.
Then i used a hose (set on stream) to spray the bleach out as much as possible.
After you get all the bleach out, your carpet should be really light. Mine wasn't white, but ALOT lighter than it was. Let it sit and dry over night.
The next day, or later that night, when it's fully dry, start in one corner and work your way around, spraying a 1 x 1 foot area, scrubing the paint into the carpet using the bristle brush. The brush helps get the paint it, and keep the carpet from becoming hard. You can paint bigger areas at a time, but i noticed spraing bigger areas resulted in light spots. I did 2 coats. It took a few hours including dry time, but it was well worth it.

Anyway, thats how i did it. Sorry if my long post confused anyone lol. Good luck

Do exactly what BCIeclipse said. Ive done the same thing to interior carpets also. But if I were you, just go to www.jcwsportcompact.com and get the ACS custom carpet for our cars ($200). But if your strapped for cash, dye it, just take your time and do it right.

Well I had grey carpet yesterday and today it is black and looks brand new. All I did was took it out, powerwashed it at a local carwash, let it dry over night, then painted it with that fabric paint from duplicolor and it looks amazing IMO. I even did the floor mats. I took some good pics that I can email to anyone who is interested tonight from home. Just hit me up at chad@isitthechad.com

I think I am gonna try it on the headliner next. I put the carpet back in last night and the whole car looks better inside. Its amazing!
