#5482, "RS Interior vs. Higher Models"

Hey guys...a few years ago when I was buying a car, all my broke ass could afford was an RS. I've heard from people that the interior of the higher models (GS, GS-T, & GSX) is different from mine. I think the differences are in the doors and the center console, but correct me if I'm wrong. I was wondering if anyone happened to have pictures of their interior so I could see what it looks like? I'm trying to decide if an upgrade is worth it...

I belive the 95-97 models have a solid peice plastic doors. My 98 RS has vinyl doors, and looks pretty damn nice in comparison.

It is true that the 95+ GS - GS-X models have a better center console, which is easily upgradable in your RS. (I did it)

maybe you can see this in the picture?

Wow! That center console does look a lot better! Mine is that cheap plastic crap. Could you help me out on the swap? Do I have to replace the whole thing? Any directions, hints, tips, etc. would sure help me out a lot...oh, and where did you get the new one? Thanks in advance!

Junoon -- tell me about it. Could they have made our doors any cheaper?? My plastic doors are startin' to look like ass. Now I wanna change the insides of my doors too.

i noticed in the pic that you had an aftermarket head unit. i was wondering how you got the pocket that is under it or even if you used a kit or was it custom made, cause i so want a pocket under mine instead of the gay kit that mine has.

i think the door panels depend on if you have power windows/locks or not. my 99 has cranks and it has the shitty plastic panels.

I am wrapping my POS solid plastic door panels in vinyl. I think it will look better. I wanna swap out the center console too. It's a piece of SHIT! Anyone know what's up here? I have cranks. Was afraid of later expenses involved with Power windows/locks. Oh well, any details?

Okay, the GS+ model center console ran me like $50 (raped) from satan. It is just a new bottom and a lid. The RS console has some bubbled out thing (I really cant describe it) that has to be ripped out and replaced with the new GS+ bottom. You see, the bubbled out peice is covering where the lid of the GS+ models "snap" to keep the lid closed.

Replace that, and you will see a hinge you can drill two screws in there to mount the lid and your done. I wish I had pictures, but when you get the parts, you'll know what Im talking about.

As for the doors, yeah I think the doors with roll-up windows were the only plastic ones, they need a flat surface so they can rotate, and the vinyl doors have grooves and arent flat at all.

What's dat about the doors needing to be flat and wha? I just bought leather door panels, cut holes where the window crank has to go and voila, looks clean and 10000 times better than the POS plastic 1 piecers. I do need to wrap the power window and lock button holes with some leather or vinyl or somethin' but other than that it looks very good, I'll try and get you some pics.

Niclipse--thanks a lot for the info, I'm sure I'll get what you're saying when I get the parts...do you know any good junkyards for DSM's where i won't get screwed over?

Alexries -- Whoa the door mod sounds cool, please try to get some pics. How much did the whole thing cost you? Would it be cheaper to just get whole new doors off a higher model and run the wiring necessary for the power doors/windows? Has anyone done this?

Thirdivzn- OK, I bought the door panels off a GST at the junk yard for $100 EACH. The guy wanted to charge me more because I led him to believe I was from the show "JACKASS" on MTV (Read below for more info). Anyway when I pulled the doors off, they still had the buttons in them, but when I got to the register, he said the buttons would be an extra $50 EACH side. Didn't buy 'em though, the only other thing you would need would be the motor to run the windows and the door lock actuator deal, I'd guess $250 each side. Probably cheaper if you go with aftermarket windows and doorlock kits. I dunno.

"Me on JACKASS Story"- Anyway before I went inside the trailer/cashier stand/office this guy went in before me and handed the owner a bunch of papers and stuff and said there would be a camera crew in front of the yard filming something (commercial or something didn't hear the guy), anyway the owner was walking after the guy making lame jokes such as "make sure you get the sign" and this and that. I was wearing a black T-Shirt that said "JACKASS MTV", a replica of the crew shirts, anyway, then I walk in and another employee sees me with the shirt on and starts to go NUTS. He's yelling and jumping around and shit and calling his other buddies, at first I was like I'm not with the show or anything, but he couldn't hear me over himself. "HEY I WANNA BE ON THE SHOW MAN, WHERE ARE THE CAMERAS MAN, SHIT" Oy, idiots, anyway this place has like 100 F'ed up Clipses and 3000GT's Talons and RX7's they gots everything.

i have a 95 gs and i have the "upgraded" door interior and it's still slhitty, don't go to a scrap yard and pay for new door guts there still uncomfortable as hell. still hard plastic with some cheap ass fabric over top. if it bothers you that much than go for it but don't pay alot

Ok, here are the pics of the GSX door panels in my RS. This pic is a full view, you can see where I had to drill/cut a hole to put hte window crank through. NOTE: there is NO gap between the crank and the door panel, it fits like a glove.

This picture is of the button holes, I'm currently looking for some thin vinyl or pleather or something to wrap over the top, will look real clean. It will fold over before the hole you reach in to shut the door. Also you will notice that the door handle itself (and the lock button) are still TAN, the GSX had black ones but they couldn't be removed without removing the entire mechanism, tan looks cool though.

Oh, in this pic you can see how there's no gap between the crank and the door, and you can't even see the hole. Anyway I think it was TOTALLY worth the 2 bills I dropped for the new panels, they are much softer, and they look 100 times fuckin' nicer.

If you want to do this and you need help figuring out where to drill/cut the hole for the cranks, drop me an email @ alex_ries@hotmail.com
