Tried getting my rear wheels off today, I ended up bleeding before I could get any wheel to budge off the hub. I suppose with a big enough hammer they'll pop off, but it seems that whacking with a block of wood and plain old hammer would free atleast one. Judging by the amount of rust on the rear drums themselves (the reason I tried getting the wheels off), they've probably sat on the car all winter before I bought my car last march. So, any pointers would help. liquid wrench?

oh, and while off topic, is the 500 degree engine spray paint the right stuff for the rear drums?

might not be the "right way" to go about it, But i ran across a similiar problem when I went to put my rims on... I just put a long bar (about 3 feetish) on the end of a socket wrench and gently stood on the bar. I didn't jump but rather threw my weight down slightly until they loosened. Might not be what you woud want to do but it worked out fine for me.

That happens to atleast one of my wheels every spring when I take my steelies off. I just duct tape a block of wood on the back of the wheel and give a good whack with a 10lbs sledge. Not sure if I'd do it that way with my 17's on tho. You might try heating the back of the wheel hub with a propane torch, I had to do that to get my rotors off, not sure if you run a risk of damaging aything like the wheel bearing or something with that method.

I just loosen up all the luts a little and then drive it back and forth. It might be a stupid thing to do but it works for me, lol

I work at a tire shop so when that happens, we take all the lugs off, then put just one back on about 5 turns or so. Then go up behind the back of the wheel and kick the shit out of it with the bottom of your foot. Works like a charm,

I also use the 'kicking' method when I go to take off my 14 in. stockers. Works like a charm for me.

thanks for the "kick it" suggestion, cheapest is better?
I'd just be a bit weary about leaning under my car and kicking the wheel, only for the jack stand to get knocked off... I'm sure I got a big enough sledge somewhere out back.
when putting 'em back on, should I stick any sort of anti-sieze grease (like the stuff you put on spark plug threads) where the rim touches the hub, or would that be a bad thing? granted, the front tires suck and the rears are apparently snow tires, so they're going in the shitcan in a couple months... 17"ers, here I come.

round one: down for the count; lost some skin on the bottom of my palm
round two: came out swingin' and armed with rust eater spray, scored KO but called short by rain. (sledges are fun.)
round three: cleaned the crap off the back of the tire.
round four: sanding block and emory paper leads to a smoothly pitted drum, guess there was a lot of nasty rust... and only knicked a knuckle.

guess nothing beats a good sledge and some rusted bolt remover type stuff. without the help of some power tools, I doubt I'll be able to smoothe the surface down so it's not pitted... seems like the drum was worse than I thought. should I bother to follow up with finer grains of paper, or just say to hell with it and just clean it up a bit more and paint the damn thing?

I sanded mine down w/ some pipe cleaner abrasive by hand only. I got it smooth enough so only mild rust humps were seeable by the eye. I painted them black and you can hardly notice. My 17'' Typhoons are pretty much Motegi MR7 clones, so you can see the drum pretty well (as opposed to stock rims that cover the area).

I dunno, it looks okay to me. I just sand and re-paint them every spring before I put my 17's back on

imo, if you paint them black, it wont be too bad no matter how uneven the drum is.

i usually kick it from the fron of the wheel.. usually on the top edge.. you don't have to get under the car

I put my wrench on my talons wheels today, and pulled like a bitch, and nothing, so i turned around bput the wrench on the wheel, and just kicked the shit outta them with my heel and weight, boom, those things broke loose in no time

1998 Eclipse RS --show car--

i had my wheels siezed on there big time. i tired numerous hammers of all sizes to no avail. i finally found the simple solution. i used a crow bar to gently pry against the back of one spoke and the brake pad housing thing. it doesnt take nothing but a little tap and it pops right off. doesnt hurt the brakes either.
