#5287, "Water in spare compartment..."

and the carpet under my rear floor mats is wet. Does anybody know where the leak could possibly be? I first noticed this when I was checking my jack and noticed that the spare compartment was half filled with water. It was rusty, so maybe the water was sitting there for a while. Just yesterday, I was vacuuming my car and noticed that the carpet in the rear was wet. If anyone knows anything that would help, I would appreciate it.

There are two rubber washers that plug up the bottom of the rear spare tire well (you can take them out to let water drain out). Make sure those are in. Also, there are a few clear plastic tubes, which route water from the edges of the hatch down to under the car. Make sure these tubes are actually in their proper places, and not routing water into your trunk instead. You have to take apart the rear trunk panels in order to see them I believe...

yeah i discovered this on my car yesturday. i was aware of a water problem that would somhow allow water into the plastic panels that are attatched to the hatch, but im clueless as to how the water gets in. i have even checked my drain tubes and the appear to be unclogged. i had no idea that there had been water accumulating where my spare was. i just poped the plugs and let the water drain. if anyone else has any ideas let me know. i have been told that this is a problem that plagues 2g cars. oh and it only seems to happen when it rains hard or i take the car through a car wash.

LAST EDITED ON 12-Jun-01 AT 07:00 PM (PST)

Chack the rubber lining that goes around the hatch. If you can have some one spray around the hatch with a pressure washer or a strong hose nozzle and get inside the car and see if water comes in. Dont spray the car too hard if you use a pressure washer. It can take off your paint if it is a good one!!! And if you can take off the panels in the back by the seats and in the trunk and look for water marks. Water will leave a drip mark if it runs down something over and over.
