#40339, "Who has painted their rims?"

I would like to know if it's as good as powder coating, what kind of paint did you use, primer if any and where did you get it? How long did it last? Did you have to take the tire off to paint the rims? How long did you have to wait before you could drive with it on? Pictures would be nice.

ok, this is kind of stupid, but i used to have a 89 dodge colt that i painted the rims on. i used some generic chrome spraypaint and no clear coat, and i put on about 3 coats. i didnt remove the tire, i just taped it off with newspaper and masking tape really well (this step is important). i used a bit of simple green and water to clean them before painting.

the results were phenominal. i couldnt believe it, because i wasnt expecting much, but they looked brand new. i had the car for almost a year afterwards, and in that time there was no chipping or peeling, and even with a high pressure car wash they held up. i would assume, however, that a nice "curb hug" would have taken off my nice finish. long-term reliability is an issue with a simple paint job, but for a short term solution or even a test, you could see how it would look beofer you commited), spray paint rules! emoji

Mine are painted. I used 2 or 3 coats of black sandable primer, then I used 3 coats of low gloss black engine paint and then followed with 2 or 3 coats of clear coat engine paint. I spent a total of 26 buck on 12 cans of paint and still had 1 primer, 1 black and 1 1/2 clear left over when I was done. I was able to do all the painting in one day with the rims off the car but the tires still mounted but masked. It's not as durable as powdercoating because I did have some chips where rocks had hit but one or 2 quick sprays with the black paint and the chips are gone again. If I had the money to powdercoat then sure I would but I didn't feel like spending $50 - $100 per wheel.

I painted my rims black about a year ago. They have held up really good, but do have a couple chips from rocks or other road debri hitting them. I used a high temp black primer, then about 6 coats of a cheap black spray from walmart, then did about 7 coats of cheap clear coat. All in all, I am really happy with the way they turned out.

i painted sum 14s awhile back... just be sure to use high temp paint cuz your brakes transfer a lotta heat to your rims, and, u can use vaseline instead of tape/newspaper to mask off the tire......

good luck

I just painted my TSW VX1's graphite grey. Duplicolor is the best to do use. They came out phenominal. I will try and get some pictures soon. They will be off my car until this cruddy winter weather leaves us. Sanded w/ a 3m Sanding Pad, then cleaned, painted 3-4 coats of paint, then 3 coats of clearcoat.

THAT VASELINE TIP KICKS ASS emoji
I remember I did my old 14 steels (which were rusted to hell) one afternoon in the apartment parking lot. I took one off at a time with the trunk jack, masked it off with tape, and then just wiped em down with windex. I just used simple black Rustoleum. No primer or anything. Put them on the car wet, let it sit for an hour and drove it. They've held up excellent. The gloss is starting to fade on em from the car wash brush thing and brake dust, but the more effort you put into prepping the surface and selecting hi-temp paints, the better./longer it will last I'm sure.

I just painted mine with the Dupont wheel paint. I have the stock directional 5-stars, I masked off the outer lip and went nuts. I took each wheel off, washed thouroughly, let dry, wiped down with windex, then painted. I LOVE THIS PAINT. seriously, I was able to do it in two coats without any running or fish-eyes. I put them in front of a fan, and each coat dried in like 10 min. The paint is beautiful, I used the graphite color and my wheels look like they were powder coated. Awesome product IMO. I will post pics when I can, I dont have a digital camera yet emoji

I painted my 16's and they looked good, but then I didn't do all the parts perfectly even, and I think powdercoating would have coat out a lot nicer.
