#38187, "Talon roof paint question"

This has been buggin me for about a year now. I haven't been able to hand wash the car as much as I would like (once a week!) since I moved into an apartment, but when I do, and I'm drying it off with a chamois or whatever, black paint comes off onto the thing! The paint still looks great (aside from some mild fuzzies), tho. No blisters, no peeling, just paint residue on the sham. Does anyone else have this goin on? Am I destined to have a polished roofline some day? WTF? I don't want Burt Reynolds (MAACO) doing my paint job anytime soon, but even THAT's getting above my budget! What to do? Buffing compound? Clear in a can...?

I can't tell you for sure - but every spring when I wax my car (I live in Canada, pretty harsh winter) I get black paint coming off on the rag. Basically what it is, is oxidization. The sun shines on the paint and it begins to fade, and when you wax it the paint comes off on the cloth. I don't know if its actually that much paint, but it should be fine. (if I got this wrong, correct me, nicely and not yelling emoji )

I can't say for sure because I don't know your car though.

i get the same thing when i wax...although it doesnt happen if i just wash and dry the car. ive heard that wax "dissolves" the paint or somnthing (in order to fill in swirl marks), so i always thought a little rubbing off was normal.

also keep in mind that whatever black paint mitsubishi used to paint these cars sucks my balls. ive NEVER seen a black eclipse that didnt begain the have faded paint (especially on the hood and wing) after 6 years or so.

:shhh: i do cocaine :/shhh:

Man, I love this site. I was nervous posting at first because I thought I was the only one out there who had 130K+ mi, had a leaky head gasket or rear main seal, had the twisted key from the trunk not unlocking and had the paint coming off my roof. Now I know I am not alone! I guess I'll just keep an eye on it and maybe someday I'll just paint the whole thing flat black...

Thanks guys! emoji

i have a 98 black RS and the paint on my old hood and on my roof is cracked under the clear coat. i was told that it was from the heat cause black soaks up heat and all. especially since i'm in new mexico.

Heat's an interesting idea. I moved to Phoenix from Wichita, KS. The roof had been doing that stuff for a while back there, but I hadn't given it much thought since I moved down here. I've also heard that it might have something to do with the "wax" you get at DIY carwashes. One problem - many causes.
