I'm gonna remove my rear seats for good. Nobody likes to sit back there, they are uncomfortable, and dropping a few pounds off the car is always a good thing.
What did you all use to cover the back when you removed the seats? I have seen some custom jobs that look really nice. Any suggestions on keeping road noise to a minimum with the seats gone?
I like the pics of sd_eclipse's ride and m_berrow's ride with the seats gone. I'm not looking for anything fancy just wanta give it a "stock like" look with minimum road noise. Weight is a concern also. I wanta drop weight by doing this not add weight by making it look good. Just wanta make it look clean.
Materials, places to buy materials, price to took to get the job done would be very useful info. Thanks for any help in advance.
if you wanna loose weight back there get rid of the rear seatbelts and all their assocoated parts. They far outweigh the foam seat. AS far as dressing up back there, you can mold fiberglass or even use some wood to create a frame and then carpet it. Just play around with diff. ideas until you find what you like.
well, i put a 300lb sub box where the backseat uysed to be, but im assuming you dont want to do the sam
before the sub wall was installed, i made a simple "shelf" that was approximatly the same dimentions of the backseat. i used the factory piece (the piece where your butt goes, not the back part) and traced its vertical and horizontal profile onto wood, then assembled and carpeted the pieces. i left the seat backs out (kinda looked like a pickup truck back ther )of course, you dont really loose any weight this way (except for the seat backs, probably a good 30 lbs at least with all the belts and stuff) but if you want to mount some audio equipment/nos/etc. on it it makes a perfect spot. if you wanted to go REALLY lightweight you could do somthing with fiberglass, but that would be a big first project if youve never worked with it before.
I should have some pictures of my audio install up sometime soon here; im waiting on my girlfiend to go develop them. that should help illustrate the "shelf" a little better.
The seat belts, bolts, brackets, and everything else is gonna out with the rear seats. I should have mentioned that but everything back there is getting taken out. I can stand some noise from the exhaust and fuel pump but I wanta deaden it as much as possible while not adding more weight then I take out. I'm not really into auido and fiberglass work is way outta my realm. I'm not much of a fabricator. I can do simple wood work such as sub boxes and racks.
I'm thinking a thin wood board cut to fit, carpeted, and some type of sound deading material on the bottom side. Then a thin would board with the same scheme to cover the trunk entrance area minus the sound proofing material... I dunno. Since I'm broke I can't go to expensive. It seems as though I could do this very cheap if I can find materials.
You could jus sorta make a fake floor that comes up where the florr begins to slope up and begins to go to the rear of the car just clearing the hump in the center. Coat it with dynamat and stuff it with something and that should do both of what you want. Throw some carpet on it and a bed.....you ready to pimp it
Thats a cool idea. I'm gonna start getting materials together tomorrow and hopefully have it done by this weekend. I'll take pics...theres no telling how its gonna come out. I'll start with an idea then completely change my mind after I'm half way done. Oh well, I'll get pics up next week.
That was my big plan......jus a flat fake floor across the whole trunk area and fabricate something so i could hold a full size spare underneath it. But I have a different idea that includes a pyramid, an lcd screen, a 15" sub, and a couple amps . I am gonna try n give HondaHater21 a run for his money on most creative 2gnt member this year We'll see though.
ive got a rather dumb question...If you plan on losing weight by removing your belts and rear seats then your only going to drop 46 pounds....I measured it on a scale when i temporarily removed them but I put them back in after I decided that taking them out and covering them up with something would get me a weight drop of only a negligable amount.....I think it looks cleaner with the rear seats inplace unless u go out and get a custom made fiberglass cover which isnt all THAT light anyway.....Just my opinion, I figured id give it out.

The rear seat saga is more of a personal opinion. Myself...i hate it....i kept it in for a road trip, and soon it will be out for good. It just gets in the way to me. I refuse to give peeps rides anyway . Besides....a flat floor gives alot of space and an easy base to start some perty insane things. Oh the ideas i have come up with. Once i have a garage you will all see.....Muhahahahaah.....n shit yo
I don't really care how my interior looks. I don't have a show car...my car will never be a show car cause I don't care for them other than they are nice to look at.
The rear seats may be a minimal weight reduction, but its really the fact that I don't like them. They are pointless and whenever I go out with friends to a bar or club everyone wants to try and pile in my car. Well, I'm gonna put a stop to that once and for all. No more of this, "Lets ride in James' car" bullshit.
On another note. If i can't make something that I am happy with then I will put the seats back in.
