well, i wanna start playing with this stuff! where do i start? where do i buy the stuff? what all exactly do i need?? wheres the best instructions?? i wanna start small maybe with making a custom peice to replace my center vents.

do alot if searches on the net that will help alot. Get lots of ruber gloves, non wax coated cups for the resin, sticks to stur it up, paint brushes, clear packing tape is your freind! resine will not stick to it, so line what you are working on it and it will pop off, tin foil is another thing to coat glass with, ummmmmmm....... do a few test strips to see how it works. I usealy cover the area im gana work with clear tape, then the surounding areas with tinfoil. Then cut a bunch of 2" by whatever strips of glass, that coat the plastic tape with resine, plase a strip on it, than brush into the glass resin till its soked, repat till done. when ready for next layer, just scuff up the glass, and put next layer on and have fun!

Yeah tape is good. I just lay down the fiberglass sheets, and pour a LOT of resin on it. this was for the back side of my bumpers though, to provide reinforcement.

what about drying times? how long do you need to let the previously applied strip dry before starting the next one. i know the stuff gets hot when curing, so.. maybe when it cools? oh, and where do you get your materials? tia.

well dryin times vary, at hot temps it will take bout an hour or 2 and cold days it can take a hole day. you can speed it up by useing a heat lamp. also when you are plasing the glass down you dont have to wait, just keep goin cause if you m,ixed the reine worng you may just have 5 min to plase everything

I'm also trying to learn how to work with fiberglass. I'm still a little confused on the basics. I've looked around on the net but had trouble finding a good write-up. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Also, where do you buy the supplies? Thx.

Yes you can add as many layes as you want befor the resine dires and you can pick up the resine "polyester resin" from discount auto parts, it seems to be the cheapest, and the glass you can buy from walmart or dicount. Also try your local body suply store

2" cut what? why strips of glass (fiberglass), please a a strip on it(strip of fiberglass), soked (how do I know if it's soked or not), just scruff up the glass, and put next layer on and have fun(I don't understand) NEED PICTURES and better directions

does fiberglass sick to everything, or is that way they sell special fiberglass mats and if you have to use the mat, have many layers should you use of the mat, so that it holds strong

I know its hard for me to make a qick writeup when im tired and all the butons are soo close on the keyboard!

fiberglass gets it strength for many reasions, the fiberglass cloath is the struture and the resin is the hardner that makes it stiff. Now fiberglass mat is stronger and great for a middle section(like a sandwich) but its harder to finish

what I try to say is when layin the glass (fiberglass or glass'in) it is easyer for the first layer or 2 to do it in smaller, easyer to manage strips. If you use a big piece you can have it distort or fray and now you are pissed and yelling. N e way FIRST LAYER- you should have a mold or something to lay it on..... plastic tape, tin foil, ext.... You want to mix the resin (polyester resin bondo brand) acording to the instutions. ok, get your brush out and put a layer of resin on the surface you want to glass. next place a DRY strip of glass onto the wet resin you just put down. now it will stick to it so it dosent move. now coat the glass till it is soaked (it is whit dry, so when you soak it, you just let it absorb all ofthe resin makin sure there are no dry spots) once that strip is done, place another where ever you need it. you can place as many layes of glass as you want at a time, just remember, the resin will dry so remember that!

Ok, now you have a hard shell of whatever you made, if you did one layer, its thin an you want it thiker. but the resin wont stivk to it, so inbetwwen layers you need to ruff up all of the surface. you should be able to see what has been scuffed up and no while doin it. Once done scuffin, clean your project will a bit of alcohol to clean it. Now folow the same steps, paint resin, put on glass, soak. depending on what you are making and how strong it needs to be, you might wana put a layer of fiberglass mat down inbetween layers to strengthen it up a bit

fiberglass is a two step process that consists of a fabric (either fiberglass mat or cloth), and a resin/catalyst mixture. when the resin is mixed with the catalyst, it hardens, but is not vary strong unless it has some sort of structure to bond to...hence the fabric. you can pick up all of your supplies at any walmart, autozone, etc. also, instead of using a fiberglass cloth/matt, you can use speaker grill material or an old cotton/fleece shirt to provide the structure. fiberglass is very simple in concept, but takes a while to master. anyone interested in learning more about it should visit an audio related site such as www.sounddomain.com or www.termpro.com .do a few searches in the forum sections on fiberglass and you will encounter a wealth of detailed information, including links to step-by-step pictorials of using fiberglass. also, visit www.alpine1.com and look at the pictures of the build-up of one of the demo cars. although they are more extreme than 99.9% of the cars out there, theres some really good pics of how to establish a framework and build fiberglass onto it.

one more question

resin, put on glass, soak, when you say let it soak, should I put extra resin on top of the glass too? I understand that you put resin on frist then the glass, then let it soak but to let it soak, should extra resin be added?

think of it like this, the first coat of resin is to make sure the glass will stick to the surface and not move (thats why its just a thin coat), when you soak it you are letin the glass soak up all the resin like a sponge, I really don t know how to tell you how to just poor a crap load of resin on it and make sure the glass absorbed it all, but if you still dont get how somthin can absorb the resin, just dump all the leftover resin on top to drown the glass
