#25527, "creating new lightweight (race only) hatch"

as it reads above...

i am very interested in either creating, or havin sumone who knows what they are doin create a fiberglass/carbon fiber/whatever is light and can take the stress hatch...

i dunno what the rules are at the trak, or the streets, but i am almost positive that there is a good amount of weight to be lost, expecially in my case w/da turbo spawla...

im thinkin that the hatch weighs in around 200lbs (+-50), anybody know the actual weight??
same w/turbo spawla for those of u who have bought one, or swapped yours out, got an estimate of weight fer me??
both??

i wanna figure out the total weight, and get sum ballpark figures and ideas on construction....

also, is lexan the only option for glass??? i know plexiglass is lighter than glass, and w/a race only hatch, and laws...maybe the hatch doesnt need to have a window in it...

any feedback/ideas about construction/problems yall think i may run into will be appreciated

I don't think it would be safe in the event of a rollover, so I think if you had it, they would require a roll cage in your car, which would also add weight. I don't think all the work and money spent would be worth losing 200 lbs. You would probably be better off saving for turbo or NOS. The lightweight hatch and lexan window alone would probably run over 500 bucks.

I hear ya though Sean... that hatch weighs a ton! When I brought this up among people they all had the same question.... Would this hatch latch like the stock one or would you use hood pins or something to secure it?? I think it would be dificult to make one sturdy enough to latch but yet still light enough to make a difference. I dunno, just throwing my thoughts out there.

go here:
http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/

click on products, then on fiberglass products.

they dont mention a weight. maybe call them up and find out if its legal for street use, and how practical it is.

>I don't think it would be safe in the event of a rollover

why would it not be safe.. when i got in an accident all that the rear hatch did was shatter and throw glass EVERYWHERE... and cut up my passengers.. it holds now wait and does nothing but create problems in a wreck, a fiberglass hatch with lexan window would be more safe... and about a roll bar adding weight.. its worth it emoji
