About a month ago I took the center piece to six different paint shops and they all said that you couldnt paint it. None of them even wanted to try. So, I painted it my self. I filled in the key hole too.

Do you guys think it looks ok???

Before I did my taillight mod, i did the same with fiberglass puddy and paint. I don't know why they said it coundn't be done??? The only thing is after a while, the puddy srinks and you can see an outline of the key hole. But it's still a body mod!!!

Sorry for the delay in posting replies, I've got a real mess w/ my clutch. The metal tubing that runs to the slave cylinder has a split on it and all my cluch fluid is just draning out. I will probably have to order the part. (wonderful... another week without my car!!!!!!AHHHHHHHHH)what an F'n week!

But anyways,

I used "Import Color" (yellow cans) paint from Pepboys. Most pepboys have books by the paint where you can look up your color code. It will tell you what number spray can or cans to use. In my case the color code is X13, in the book it says to use 5200(shade of black) and 5201(clear coat).

I think that as long as your car is factory color the book had the colors you needed to use.

Here is the process that I used:

1. Sand the plastic with 150 grit sand paper (but not to hard)
2. wash w/ soap and water
3. Spray w/ "Auto Prep" spray (at Pepboys to)
4. spray a coat of sandable primer on.
5. use soap and water with 1500 grit sand paper to take out any imperfections
6. repeat steps 4. and 5. three times (three coats of primer)
7. spray the base coat on (in my case it is black)
8. use soap and water with 1500 grit sand paper to take out any imperfections
9. repeat steps 7 and 8 four times (4 to 5 coats)
10. I let it dry 24 hours before I sprayed the clear coat.
11. Do steps 7 and 8 only this time use clear coat. I put on two coats of clear coat.
12. I also let it dry 48 hours before I put it on my car.

Your going to find that whenever you try to paint small dust particles will find their way to the peice your trying to paint. I used a can of compressed air to dust it of before I put on a new coat.

Not bad for my first attempt at body work dont you think.

Hope this helps.

If you have a air compressor and a paint gun (you can get them for about 50-60 bucks at most hardware stores) you can do it without using a can. Just go to any auto paint supply store and give them your code. Most of them can mix your color just like they do with household paint. If you dont have the compressor or paint gun it might be alittle more $$$ But I think its worth it. And like I said I couldn't find any paint shops that wanted to paint it.

If any of you guys dont want to tackle the work your self I would do it for like $25 + shipping and supplies. It only cost me $15 in paint and supplies. Just a thought...

Hey, that looks really good. Maybe I shoulda filled in the keyhole before I painted mine.

But I don't see why shops say they can't do it. Mine was painted magenta gray pearl over a year ago, and not even one scratch on it. They just have to sand it down real good and put lots of paint and clear over it. Also, maybe they just don't want to bother with taping down everything (they have to mask off the rest of the tailights, the bumper, the trunk etc), just to paint such a small piece.

I just took the peice off. Then I took it to the shops and got the "no" ???????

Oh well, That just means when other eclipse owners see mine painted and want to go get theirs painted they will get the "no"

I've been contemplating doing this but I didn't know how it would look on a black eclipse. Now I know. I was also planning on getting those ruby red altezzas put on and now I positive that I will love how it looks when I do it. Just curious though, is that the factory center piece or did you paint the altezza center?

It's the factory piece, The one that came with my taillights kept getting water in it. I had been thinking about painting it for awhile. The water in the center piece just gave me more of a reason to do it.

Are you happy with your altezzas? I'm kinda concerned about how they look lit up. I don't know if they are red enough.

I love them. I didnt like the center piece though. They look great at night to. Its kind of nice having taillights that no hondas have. (yet, that is) NOPI has tham for like $200 or so.
