#2269, "Drum to Disc Conversion"

Has anyone done the Drum to Disc conversion listed in the MOD section? I installed the Discs this weekend and want to add my 2 cents. The instructions for the conversion are actually pretty good. There is one step that is VERY difficult with out the correct tools. In step 5 "Disconnect rear brake line clamp at the knuckle and at the (10mm) b-nut fitting in the forward part of the wheel well", BE VERY CAREFUL. a 10mm wrench WILL NOT WORK. Instead, go to a autoshop and buy some flange wrenches, or tube wrenches (depending on who you talk to). I tried doing it with a 10 mm wrench and I rounded out the nut. It took me nearly 4 hours, 1/4 can of WD-40, 2 pairs of vice grips and 2 bruised hands just to get the nuts off. Save yourself the headaches, go out and buy the correct tools.

Thanks for posting that here. I was wondering if the instructions
were complete or not. Is the brake pump in the RS the same as in
the GS/GSX? Is that even a relevant matter?

Do you think that the front Calipers and rotors would actually
bolt on the back? I am considering upgrading my front brakes (to
Aftermarket/GSX) so I might as well move my front stuff to the
back..

Ideas? Other opinions?

I hope someone answers it Guy.

I want to know as well. BTW Guy, have you read this write-up on the conversion. Deano did it.

I also live in the south and corrosion is not a major factor on my suspension. I guess the rule is if it looks like it is stuck, find the correct tool or use a visegrips emoji There are many jobs that require special tools and most of the time I have to make do. I am glad you find the instructions "pretty good"....I wrote them a few days after the install and I tried not to leave anything out.

The front calipers will not fit(bolt on normally)the rear and would require a thicker rotor. If you look hard you will see major differences between the front and rear systems.

I am not sure if the master cylinder is the same on the GSX compared to the RS/GS/GS-T. I do know the proportioning valve is the same on all 2G models. (80%/20%) An adjustable would not normally work for cars either. "search back for more detailed answers"

allmitsubishi.com can still fill complete rear disc conversion kits for $250 shipped

Just to give you some perspective.... I have NEVER screwed with mechanical stuff before. The extent of my mechanical experience include spark plugs and an oil change. I was able to follow the instructions step by step almost without a hitch. (everything except for the b-nut flair wrench problem). This mod is DEFINATELY worth the $250 I spent. First of all disc look much better especially with painted calipers. I have a silver RS (although now you could never tell) with Candy Blue calipers. Second, you can definately stop better. With drums, you cannot check the status of your pads without taking everything apart. Also, you cannot adjust the rear pads without taking the drum apart. Needless to say, I can now simply look at the brakes to see the status of my pads.
