#20668, "I painted my dash and now my turn signals and brake lights won't work. HELP"

I tried to take out my dash and it was not a success so I just left it in and painted it in. But I tried pulling it out and I wounder if I might have pulled something loose that may have caused this to happen. Can someone tell me what could be the problem. Ive checked all fuses and connections under the dash and they are all fine. Ive checked relay box. Everything else works fine its just the turn signals and the brake lights that don't work.

if your turns arent working check the hazard switch/wire harnesses.. if you unplug the hazard switch it disables your turn signals (not sure about the brakes)...

when u pulled the dash, how and which direction did you do it from? the top, and pulled down, or pulled from the bottom up, etc....

?

Also, ya I think there are harnesses below the dash under past behind the steering column..check there first...then look underneath where behind the pass airbag is..theres harnesses there too...sounds like something just got unplugged, otherwise its tooo coniencedental (sp?)

OK I attemped to pull the dash out to paint it but didn't succeed. After tryin for over and hour to take the dash out I decided to push it back in and reconnect everything back up. When trying to take it out I pulled toward me and up but something was still holding it back to what seemed to be wires going to the fuse box. So like I said I pushed it back in and taped everything off and sprayed away. I used duplicolor vinyl and fabric dye and it turned out ok but it scratches off really easy. I wish I would have never done this to my car. Worst mistake ive ever made in my life...I can say this honestly. All I want is to have my turn signals hazards and brake lights to work. Im gonna go insane what should I do here guys...who should I take it too and how much am I looking at spending here? Someone help please im loosing it.

yeah dude, those wires going to the fuse box...you have to unplug the harness for them, thats how all the dash accessories are wired through the firewall is with wiring harnesses. just unplug them, they are all unique in shape so they are easy to plug back in. and the reason it scratches is because i bet oyu didnt use a clearcoat did you? porblem #2 solved. so get back out there and fix that shit

I checked all of the connections and none of them are loose I will try again tomorrow. What im thinking is maybe when I was trying to pull the dash out I somehow pulled one of the individual wires loose from the harness even though its still connected. Oh yah btw what kinda clear did you guys use on yours bc I used the duplicolor vinyl and fabric dye and it didn't call for a clear coat. So lemme know on what brand clear coat works best k. thx

Yep, be sure and check EVERY wiring harness. It only takes one unplugged for it to not work. Also, i used the same paint for my interior, and it seems to be holding up pretty well. The MOST important step is to THOROUGHLY CLEAN every surface with soap and water and rinse well and dry good with paper towels.spray surface VERY lightly with the paint. Make 3 or 4 very light coats of paint, and use just enough pait to make the color change, and be even. Too much paint and it will chip off easily. Let the stuff dry overnight too before you touch it. Also try not to touch the surface with you hands too much befrore you paint it, the oils from your hands can affect it too. I don't think this paint is supposed to be used with a clear coat, it might cause it to chip too. If you are going to use a clear coat, most any spray paint will work, and just clear over it after it dries good. Hope this helps..

Dang Aggression, sorry to hear about the problems you had when you took your dash out, I took mine out last weekend using the directions that were posted, my dash came out with no problems but it was harder and took more patience then expected, I just took my time and did it slowly. Im actually going to take the dash out again this weekend to touch up some areas that got scratched and to cover up some strange little speckle spots that seem to appear and dissapear, I also have some rough areas that seem to be due to overspray, oh well I'll make sure I have my digital camera ready to document the whole procedure.

Hey thx man. Hopefully Mike can fix the problem here. He has more experience than I do so maybe he will know whats up. But Yah I did the dash and the doors and I am gonna have to take the door panels off to touch them up a bit. But the dash came out better than the doors did. How many cans did you use on your dash...I used about 4 on the dash itself. I am gonna try and do the panels in the back seat and in the trunk this weekend hopefully. But ill get some pics up soon I promise.
