#17578, "Anyone with imagination please help"

After purchasing my car the sunroof broke. Dealer then informed me they had an after market sunroof installed. Nothing but trouble it has alredy broke 3xs and now when it rains my ass is soaked along with every other piece of interior. I would like to remove the sunroof and replace it with something. Who knows what? something that gives the car some character maybe some kind of body scoop or something that at least looks tight. Just need to keep that water out. }> I am open to all sugestions at this point.

What would benefit from the scoop and how would I direct the air flow where I wanted it without pulling more water? Is there an after market scoop made to go in a position like that?

I heard about some guy with a roof scoop that put ducting in his car just to get air inside. I really dont see how it could improve performace anyway since we arent a rear engined. Maybe ducting some air for the front brakes to cool??? I dunno, other than that, like everyone else has said-just get some aluminum and wld that on there and then put a roof scoop on.

Well it is sealled tight now thanks to the good old home made wooden wdeges. Air and weather tight but will not ever open until the replaced. Now just wait for warm dry weather hopefully I'll know what I would like to do with it by then. Maybe a police light bar or something. I'd surely win every time with that.

I don't know if it can be done but I always thought it would be cool to have a roof scoop with a neon inside. One you can't see but when you turn it on it shines out. I'm sure you couldn't use it on the street but nothing stops you in a parking lot or at a show.

Targa top sounds pretty decent and maybe a little easier than the T's because I would have to add quite a bit of metal back to the roof since it now has a large rectangular hole where the sunroof is. Now that it is sealed maybe I'll make the installer replace it until I decide for sure what exactly to do. After all it has a lifetime warranty but the company is a pain in the ass to deal with. I do appreciate all the sugesstions. Being a Cock was not intended. emoji

ok well if you go for t tops or a targa you are going to have to stiffen the chassis up because taking a part of the roof off ruins the strengh.. the body will roll and twist. so theres some more work..

would be sweet tough seen a few 2gs with targas

I am thinking the long term here. I have a brother in-law that works for a really good body shop Maybe it could be a progect car for them to play with. I'm sure they would also know where the best stiffing positions would be they are all trackies and have build some awsome 50's-60's cars. It will hurt the wallet but maybe not as much as if I was just to walk in to any old body shop. I'm sure this will be some time from now but I definitely want to do it. Maybe change the paint color at the same time emoji

you could always get a roll cage to help stiffen up the chassis if you decide to go with a targa top

I've been looking into doing a targa on mine now for a long time. In order to be a true targa though you cant have bars on the top running parallel to the side of the car. What I am looking at doing is running stainless beams underneath and welding them to the front and rear subframes. I havent gotten to really look in detail what has to be done yet since I don't have the money or the time to do it right now, but I know it can be done because I've seen a 2g eclipse (gs) with a targa before.

targa tops have been discussed before many moons ago here. The ultimate outcome and general unanomous(sp?) vote was that it is only practical to Targa Top a Spyder, not anymore more or less. The spydder is the only version that has all the crossmembers underneath the car, and in the sides...hence it weighs more...but you dont want to weigh more now do you? I have only seen one targa eclipse, and it was a spyder. Dood put superman shit all over it, logos, you name it. Same color red as mine. Looked sweet as hell but I think it cost him around 3500+ to do the conversion.

My advice? 2 options...

If you wanna KEEP a sunroof, tear out all that shit and get a track for a STOCK eclipse sunroof with sunroof glass. The track is expensive, i think $500 new and $500 new for the glass. BUT if you check out a junkyard it would be around $125 for the glass and I'm guessing around $200 for the track assembly. Then install that and you should be fine. Use lots of sealant and goop around the edges of the track. I am 99% positive that all or most aftermarket sunroofs are smaller in dimension from a stock one. They do this so that people who have the issues like you are having can always do something about it. emoji As for the sunroof switches? Its a simple track and release switch mounted up inside. Check out a buddy's car to find out how to wire it to your tracklines.

If you wanna DITCH a sunroof, tear out all that shit and go to a junkyard once again and find a roof off a eclipse or talon. Have a good body guy cut off your roof at its main support structures and weld on the new roof. The reason I say to go that way is because any kind of sheetmetal will flex and bend. Plus ANY kind of bondo up there will go fast with the sun and temperatures. Also you have to factor in daily driving and creaks and twists when you turn, etc. Theres alot of flexing up there, and no the sunroof doesnt provide THAT much of a structure support. The track itself inside the sunroof is what does that job. You ever looked at your track? Its stiff on the sides and think on the back peice. That is why. Now like I said, find a good body dood and a welder. My parents a lonnng time ago bought a 1986 Ford LTD that was half a car. It had a LTD's front half cut right down behind the drivers door welded to a rear half of another wrecked LTD from the passenger door back. It can be done and is usually SAFER this way. If you weld it right it will hold and look good as new. My parents bought that car knowing what happened to it and how it was fixed. You'd never know it. The interior, the sides, the frame, etc perfect fit and painted. Now where is the car you ask? We sold it to the neighbors down the street and they STILL drive it after the a/c went out on it. 245,000 original miles on it....120,000 or so miles on it since it was fixed. Still runs good as new. Anyway, do that and weld on another roof of a car....besides, you can still do the roof scoop idea if your really stuck on doing that route.

Hope this advice helps.

Maybe I'm getting in over my head here. I was just looking for a way to avoid the assholes who put the piece of junk in my car in the first place. As the Ideas started rolling in I was dreaming more and more of what would probably be more work and money than I am willing to do right now. Maybe when this becomes an alternative car instead of my primary vehicle I can then play with the targa idea. Like you said I want no additional weight so this may not be an option at all. By that time my brainstorms may have even started in another direction. I'm not stuck on the scoop idea but figure it to be a fairly quick and inexpensive fix to my current situation. However wouldn't the scoop cause more wind resistance and drag, and if so how significant would it be. And if I were to go scoop wouldn't the back of the cause the sunroof not to open ( nowhere for it to go)and if the sunroof was completely removed at this point the scoop would do nothing but channel water right inside. The axact thing I'm trying to avoid now. Thank you for all the advise and thorough contimplating. Wow llok at those big words they are probably spelled wrong.:o
