#13662, "Should I waste time painting door handles, or have a shop do it."
I have a silver car and bought Balazos door handles so if I fugged up than I can just try again without any downtime...
The question is though can I get a good silver match? I have my paint color made in a spray can but whenever I paint I can never get a good clear coat layer on.
What do you guys suggest for doing clear coats. How many layers, what kinds, how long to wait.
Icjeclipse and 804 you should know everything about it so give me some tips please.
Thanks guys!

The hard thing about matching silver is that the stock silver color has a gold pearl in it (and it might also have a light blue pearl). Spray cans can't really match it to well, and yes the clear is hard to get smooth. I would try painting it, and then shoot thin layers of clear AFTER the base coat completely dries. Then, if you mess up, just take it to a body shop to do for about 50 bucks probably (along with any other little things you need to paint). Also, the labor to take out the door handles and lock and install the new ones is a real pain. If you can't do it yourself, you'll probably pay someone about 2 hours labor to do it. You need a small 8 mm crescent wrench too I think because the glass window is in the way of one of the bolts. Good luck.
BTW< if you paint it yourself, it for sure will not be a good match. Even if you pay a shop to do it, it will still not match perfectly with the rest of your car unless you have the car painted too (just because the stock paint is faded etc). Like if you look at a factory painted door handle or side skirts, they don't really match perfectly with the car either. Mine were obvious when I had the magenta gray pearl color (side skirts and door handles were a slightly different color) because it was painted at different times and different surface probably (metal vs. plastic).

yeah, what ^ he said. I say just try it yourself. Scuff it up with 400 grit first, then shoot a couple thin coats of base followed by i or 2 thin coats of clear.
