I went with blue from radio shack. I think toal was $6 with everything. $4.83 for the LED, $.80 for the resistor. At least for at the 3 radio shack.

well, I would just solder up everything so all so all you have to do is take the stock socket out, and plop the new light in.

the gauge cluster would be a little more time intensive... mainly due to sanding the backs of the stock gauges down.. not to menchen cost more.. just try 4x7 and thats just the leds..

You got the 2600mcd radio shack leds, correct? Are they bright enough? Those are the ones I bought but I haven't installed them yet.

I can post a pic of the leds and the packages if anyone needs it for some reason.

the radioshack ones at 2600mcd are the same brighness as the varad ones.. not sure on the other colors but for the blue it is that way.. believe me.. i have gotten both.. the only way i can think of making it brigter is to add multiple leds behind the hvac and that would take some major customizing..

I was thinkin on how to put more in the HVAC, I think you would need a dremel with a fex adapter and drill another hole.

yeah pretty much something like that.. what id liket o do is to get that thing out of the car and mess with it.. but from when i was in there last.. that thing isnt going to be easy to get out.. but a flex tool on a dremel sounds like a great idea.. didnt even really think about that..

I've also done this mod (I posted a small write up on it in a thread back when) and I know the HVAC very well now. I could Rig up a dozen blue LED's and resistors to wire, and send them out to people relatively cheap. All you guys would have to do it take the 'rig' I send you, snip the old light off and connect the end of my wires to the wires that were connected to your stock bulb. The LED, wire, 330ohm resistor, and soldering are already done for you (by me).

Anyone interested? If so I will get to this asap, I can have them all done in a day or so. E-mail me if interested.

Someone mentioned that the VARADs don't need resistors, is this true? If so it sounds like the way to go, simply because you don't need to do any extra soldering.

the varads dont need resistors, but by the time you buy the radioshack leds and resistors, the prices are the same or varad is still more expensive depending on where you get them. Ill go call all the radishacks and have them order a bunch, Im gana need some for that led gauge conversion. 7 right?

the resistor is already built into the varad ones i believe but the resistor is cheap.. and easily installed to any led depending on the application.

You can get as many as you need without worrying about your local radioshack running out of stock by ordering them at radioshack.com. I'm glad to see fellow 2GNTers helping each other out!

276-316 is the Blue LEDs
271-1113 is the 330-Ohm .5 watt Resistors

Ryan, have you also done the stock gauge cluster? How hard is that to do? And how hard is it to access the HVAC bulb. What do I need to take off? Thanks...I'm very interested.

WEll, the guage cluster is a bit different, but still similar. Okay, Ill write a little "mini write-up"

1) Remove the timr around the gauges. THere are two phillips head screws going upwards, remove those. Then get a flat head screwdriver and pop the trim out, I wedged the flathead into the edge near the bottom on the right and left, and slowly pryed around it until it came out. Lowering your steering wheels usinh the 'hydrolic lever' helps.

2) Remove the gauge cluster, there are four phillips head screws in the corners, remove them and set them aside. Then use your hands on the sides and slowly, but firly pull on the cluster. It will 'unplug' and come out. Not take that bitch inside.

3) There are several layers to the gauge cluster, use clips to remover the top clear plastic layer. Then use the clips to remove the black bezel gauge cover. (These 'layers' are kinda hard to get off, just make sure the clips are pressd down firmly and 'wrestle' with it)

4) After the black Bezel is off, you have access to the actual gauges. The tach and speedo needles are resting at zero. Pull then down (not off) pull it down and gently over the little 'nub' that stops it normally at zero. Let go and let the needle come to a resting point, it will be near the center. Mark this spot with a pencil or something (Dont to make sure it is calibrated correctly when putting back in).

5) Next, remove the needles (you do this for the tach and the mph) Use a flathead and apply steay pressure outward, and the needles withh slide off, Set them aside.

6) Remove the mph and tach gauges bu pulling them off carefully. (They are attached by a small adhesive, but just lift them off slowly gbreaking their little 'seal'.

7) Now we need to sand the back of the gauges with a small grit sand paper, in order to get rid of the orange tint they have. Hold the gauges up to a different colored light before you start sanding, notice how they are orange no matter what light. Once you sand them down a bit, you'll notice the orange goes away and the background colors will show through. Do this until the bacground color shows through the whole thing. To do this with the fuel and temp gauges, two small phillips head screws need to be removed, but same process is applied.

8) Now Put the guages back into their place. Now we're gonna turb to the back of the gauge cluster. You'll notice the dozens of small lights, and you're most likely unsure what they go to. Well, 7 of them need to be removed and replaced with LED's. $4 a pop at radio shack. That's $28, ouch -- im 18 so thats kind of a bit of money to me..

9) So now you've got your seven LED's ready and you've got your wire ready (oh yeah I forgot to tell you, you need some wire)

The way I did this was by inserting the LED's I have into a socket after removeing a stock bulb. The wrie from the bulb I just wired goes up and kind of fluch with the top of the gauge cluster so I will fit back in. this is tough to explain, but run a set of two bulbs to a 12 volt source in the car (Don't forget to have a reisitor in each of the LED lines! positive or negative it doesnt matter). After running two LED's, run another two into the same 12 volt line, but BEFORE any resistors, or the current will be weak hence not as bright LED's. Do this over and over until all seven are done. I think that does it. Any questions, e-mail me. ywia (your welcome in advance

Cool, thanks for the very detailed write up. Have you thought of putting this up on a web page? If not, I can put one up on my site as a how-to. I was also wondering how to access the HVAC bulb to change it. If you have the time, can you explain that too? Thanks a lot...

an important tip for the sanding... only sand the numbers and tick marks.. if you sand more than that, the light will dispearse (sp??) unevenly. if you do just the numbers, the light will still use the oem light spreaders (i guess thats what you can call them) and the light will shine through evenly. i messed up on my speedo sanding too much, and now you can tell where the light bulbs are.. but i did the tach right, and it looks great.. just a little tip to keep in mind..

oh yea, mark me down for a set hondahater.. thanks for doing the dirty work.. pz

i had the same problem as you hater.. i have white gauges too, so when i sanded them, i decided to paint mine a light grey.. looks good against the white gauges and since my car is silver, it matched.. the only problem with this is, that it doesnt reflect the light as well as a lighter color would.. i would suggest painting them white and maybe going around the edges with another color.. the brighter the needles are, the brighter they will light up.
