#101598, "Is it Bad to leave a Car Primed?"

After I Removed the GS Spoiler, Antenna, and Rear Wiper Assembly from my Hatch, I Bondoed the Holes that were left over and Primed the Back of the Car. I had a few Small Rust Spots in various spots, Doors, Fenders, and a Small Ding on my Roof, so I decided to just go ahead and Prime those spots too.. then I got bit carried away, since there were such Random Spots of Primer, and Primed the Whole Car. It's Dark Grey Primer, actually looks ok, and I believe I did a Good Job, Compliments from my Mechanic Neighbours and such, and I'm actually kinda' liking the Primer Look now. I was Planning on Painting the Car myself, Metallic Silver like it was Orginally, but I'm thinking something different now. How about a Light Grey Primer on the Lower Half, really looks close to the Original Paint, and Matte Black on the Hood, Mirrors, Roof, and Hatch? Note, I have 18" Motegi FF7's (Black w/ Silver Lip), so I think that Two-Tone Look will be pretty Sweet. Besides your Opinions, I have another Question. Are there any Downsides to leaving your Car Primed? I would love to leave it Primed, not only because I've grown fond of the look, but also because figure if you've got a new Scratch or Chip in the Paint, you could just lay down a Cheap, New Coat. I live in Chicago, and People can't Park for nothin'. I do Plan on eventually Painting it, but I'm in School now, and Money is Tight, so I'm into the Cheap Mods I can do on my own. Thanks a lot Guys.

Primer is more porous than normal paint so if you live in an area that gets a lot of moisture it could do more damage than leaving the metal bare. if you like the flat look it's best to just get the flat paint.

Get it painted ASAP. As said above, if you start driving your car everyday in primer it will rust out.

Other than that, its my opinion when I see a car going down the road completely in primer, I think its a piece of shit. I dont care if it was a Lambo Gallardo, if it was a primer wagon, Id tell you its a big piece of shit.

contrary to popular belief, the flat black cars that are kinda popular now actually have a clear coat on it.

if you like the grey color get some matte clear coat, that way it will be sealed and wont rust but will still have that "flat" look your after.
and technically you could put the matte clear ofer any color you wanted to make it flat, so you could put a coat of whatever grey you wanted then the flat clear and all is good.
there is a flat black eclipse running around somewhere that then used gloss clear for some of the sponsors and design on the side of the car, the way it was done looked ok.

Haha', I'd be COMPLETELY Satisfied with a Primed Gallardo, but hey, that's just me. I've heard that Primer is more Porous before, but the guy who told me that is sort of a Jackass.. Yeah.. It's been Raining a bit here for the past Couple of Weeks, but for what it's worth, not that it keeps the Moisture out, I keep my Car Garaged, the only time's it's not is when I'm at School, and it's the Hottest part of the Day, ie no Rain. I read a really cool Write-Up on Painting your Car with Rustoleum Spray Cans, Job came out really well, and for only like $75. Haha', Thanks a lot.

Ok Guys, here's the Deal. I really want to Learn how to Paint a Car. I'm not the Best at, nor do I know exactly everything as far as the Procedure goes, but from everything I've Read, Step-By-Steps Online, Instructional Videos, and from talking to various "Know-It-Alls", I think I have a pretty good Idea on how to actually Paint. Like I said, my Car is pretty much Ready for Paint right now.. Although Money is Short right now, I'd probably be able to pick up a Compressor on Craigslist for pretty cheap, by the way, what would be a good size, and some of my Neighbors have already said they would let me borrow Spray Guns. I've already got Sanding Blocks, Palm Sanders, a Crap-Load of Paper, Tape, and a Garage.. I came across a Site that had the Color Codes for our Cars a while back, buy I remember that there were like Three or Four different Silvers to choose from, I have a 98' GS, so I'm guessing it was regular "Metallic Silver"? What do you think? Any real Down-Sides to trying this out myself, you know.. besides a crappy Paint-Job?

the annoyance of having to do it all again

3 words: prep, PREP, PREP

I would honestly buy some cheap paint or see if the local jobber has some mis mixes and find some decent panels at the junkyard to practice on. get a good feel for the gun and how to hold it, how to adjust it, how to move it across your panel.

IMO, silver is almost as annoying as black. it doesn't like to stay the same color. temperature and humidity can have a HUGE impact on the tone of silver, a couple degrees can change the direction the flake orients and really make things look just a little off.

I have the nastiest prime job in the world.

By nasty, i mean it looks like complete shit. Sanded, bondoed, primed spot, sanded again, primed spot...

I'm getting it painted factory (or close to it) black soon. I've been trying to get some hookups here and there. Anything to avoid going to maaco.
