WOW I haven't seen a set of those in years! they're illegal because there's no red in the reflectors which is why you don't see them anymore.

IMO they only looked good on silver cars. my neighbor had a silver 99 gs with the clears, it looked really clean on the back of the car

couldn't you just put in red lights or would that not matter (in a legal aspect)?

There has to be an actual red reflector portion on the outside of the lens, a few years back there was some company that was making clear lense taillamps with red reflectors that actually had DOT approval (clears never had DOT approval, cops just usually didn't care as long as everything lit up red) but they looked like ass and they stopped getting sold

There's always a red reflector lense mounted usually lower in the bumper or somewhere else on the back end of the car. that makes it legal

All clear tails are legit IF they light up red/amber and IF you have the required red cubed-corner reflectors visible to the rear and to the sides. The reflectors do NOT have to be in the lens areas but can be lower on the car like seen on many SUVs and the like. That is per FMVSS standard 108.

Many times it is up to the local officers and their knowledge of FMVSS 108 as to whether they enforce the rules or have read them properly.

The all clear tails are good for getting people pulled over since they had NO red reflector on the rear or side.

Now with so many vehicles these days using clear/chrome tails you are less likely to get stopped with these than you were 5-6 years ago when they were last sold.

Check the condition of the plastic if you buy online. Many are turning yellow from UV exposure and usually the center panel goes yellow first. It also fills with dust and dirt but that can be cleaned out.

this is what i found from the NCDOT website

# Taillights must be red in color and visible for at least 500 feet.

# The law requires a white light shining on the license plate to make the numbers visible for at least 50 feet.

# All motor vehicles produced since 1955 must have red or amber lights that engage when the brakes or turn signals are used - these lights may be combined with the taillights or may be separated, and they must be visible for at least 100 feet in normal daylight.

wonderful! so now were into symantex. emoji
essentially were all right!

fine
as it stands the housings are legal to install privided:
A. they light up red for brake and red/amber for turn and have red running lights
B. there has to be a passive reflective device somewhere vissable from the sides and rear.

therefore you would need to add some sort of reflective device to either the car or the lens to make it truly legal.

again local customs will vary, some places cops actually know FMVSS 108 inside and out, other places cops only care if it lights up red.
