#103679, "Hydroplaning is fun.. until you wreck. "
Jun-25-09 12:05 AM by ThePerfectShift

Well, I was driving home from work when it started pouring. I was talking to my fiancee on the phone and told her I had to go because it wasn't safe to be driving while on the phone... I got five miles down the road and came up to a very broad right hand turn in a three lane road, (Nova for locals of Daytona). I recently put two new tires on the front and put the poorer of the two on the back.

Also recently my power steering belt came off so I've been muscling it for a couple days. While going around the corner the ass end swung out to the right, I calmly attempted to catch it and straighten up but my nearly bald rear tires and lack of power steering wouldn't allow it.

By the time I was spun 180* I could only attempt to get the car away from oncoming traffic and turned the wheel to the left to get the car to the right side of the road. I ended up hitting a curb which ripped my wheel off the hub, disc brakes still attached to the rim and the car was sent flying onto the sidewalk (facing the people who were just behind me). When the vehicle finally came to a painful, crashing stop all I could scream was "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!"

When I stepped out of the Eclipse, and regained my balance and got out of slow motion, I initially couldn't find my rear left wheel(not realizing it was wedged under the rear end of my car) and my intake filter was in the middle of the road. Luckily where I wrecked was a construction site. (I hit four of the wooden stakes holding up the mesh barrier)
Amazingly the body didn't take much damage at all, however the curb tore my rear suspension on both sides up pretty bad. I haven't had the chance to investigate the front suspension or oil pan, radiator, etc.

Here are the photos:

ThePerfectShift is now accepting donations: monetary or suspension parts. lol.

For now I will be driving my fiancees Grand Marquis but my homeboy is going to sell me a T-Bird he just picked up cheap so I'm gonna grab that for a grand. It's actually pretty sweet.. leather seats, power windows, keyless entry...........V8.............Working and non-leaking sunroof, ample trunk space..............V8............
Can you tell I'm excited about the extra 4 cylinders?

I will not be getting rid of the Eclipse so there will be no part-out. The T-Bird will just give me the opportunity to fix the Eclipse correctly and give me time to afford some suspension upgrades I've been wanting. No need to replace stock parts with stock parts when I want to upgrade them anyway.

Try a local salvage yard.

I picked up an used spindle with a darn near NEw backing plate with hubbearing for 69.

This get you by till you have the Newer upgrades

Sorry to hear about the car, ouch. At least you're allright and didn't get hit by oncoming traffic. That's the important thing.

I've got good suspension bits on my parts car that I'll sell you for cheap, just let me know what you need and I'll do my best to help out a fellow 2gnt'er

Now that I look back, I am DAMN lucky it wasn't worse. At the time I thought it was the worst thing in the world that could've happened. This will be the first accident that I've been in where I was the driver, out of the dozens of close calls. I still think I probably could have caught it if I had power steering.

On the positive side: I now TRULY understand the importance of having good tires all the way around. Thankfully it didn't cost me my life to learn that lesson.

I'm gonna buy an air compressor tomorrow. It will make this whole process a little easier. So far I know I bent the rims, cracked a trailing arm, bent the control arms on the rear and broke the brake lines. hopefully I'll get my compressor up and running tomorrow and I will know a little more in the evening.

Thanks for all the support and help. As corny as it sounds: 2GNT has given me the strength to deal with this. So thanks to everybody for being there.

as for the trailing arm: I'll take that $5. lol. It's really odd that it didn't snap like the other side did. I didn't find a good enough deal on a compressor yet. So it'll be next payday. I've come to the conclusion that I'm not touching it till I get an impact. I will update and post more pics.

well i got a little update, but no pics yet.
I got the Eclipse towed to my homeboys house so I can finally get dirty with it.
I need a set of new rims 2 are bent to shit and one is scuffed all up.
I need a new drivers axle, I need most of the rear suspension parts and figured i might as well go with GR-2s all around. The car died on impact so I figured I broke a ground or something electrical. I discovered via a multimeter and test light that the Optima redtop discharged on impact, luckily i had a yellow top sitting around. After the new battery, it fired right up no coolant leaks, no oil leakes,(well no new oil leaks)lol. Idles nice after the ECU learned the fuel curves. So i was pleased to know I didnt do any cooling system damage. I cut my cold air into a short ram cuz i was bored. I cant put any cash into the eclipse yet for parts because I'm still saving for the TBird. That thing is sex. I'll post pics soon. I haven't been on much being that my girls laptop took a dump. I'll holla when I can. Next time with pics
