#9860, "How to tell the difference between 1g and 2g 4g63 pistons?"

I just tore down my 4g63 today and its apparently been rebuilt before. It still has the crosstaching and there were clevite 77 bearings in it. As far as i know they didnt come factory with clevite bearings. I planned on rebuilding with 2g pistons on the 1g big rods. So i guess in curious is who ever built this motor before might of used 2g pistons.

Also i have a questions about balance shaft removal. Does it eliminate both balance shafts and would it be better to buy the little shaft nubs or would it be ok to just cut the existing balance shaft off and use the end of it. Ive read a few different things about buyin the ends and cutting them off.

If you're rebuilding it, won't you have to replace the pistons anyways? you're probably just going to have to measure....

yeah i am rebuilding... but the cylinder walls and pistons look practically new. Its been rebuilt before. I just dont know when or how many miles are one it. The pistons are still clean. even the tops are still silver. I wanna rebuilt with 2g pistons to up the compression a bit. I just dont know how to tell if the pistons i pulled out are already 2g pistons or not.

ok I understand now--- as shitty as this is to do, the only thing I can come up with is to measure the pistons. I think chilton's has the specs in them...I can look in a minute, i'm on my way to work out at the moment before the gym gets uber busy...

lol... thats a good sign that they will atleast fit. I figured there had to be some numbers on the 2g pistons that someone could tell me what they are so i can check them against the numbers on the pistons i pulled outta my block. Ill just go to satan and see if they will let me look at one.

The tops of the pistons should say .50 (assuming that they're .020" over). If that doesn't help, I'll take pics of a 2G piston and 1G piston so you can compare. The 1G's are dished a LOT more.
