#9722, "my engine decided to eat itself (long post i need advice"
Oct-04-04 05:47 PM by chrysler kid

i got the car back from forced performance this morning, everything seemed back to normal at first. my timing belt had snapped and fp completely rebuilt my head and put new belts and everything on it, cost me $1700 but i was assured that this is what my car needed more than anything(i could have gotten a swap for cheaper but i instructed a head would be a better investement dohdohdoh). i go to class and my mom and my brother go pick up my car. i call her and talk to her on my way home from class and everything seems fine, she mentions how the mechanic said the transmission is on its way out (which it wasnt when i brought it there) to which i remarked, its just a little quirky, first gear like to pop out if you let off the gas after accelerating in first gear, but ive never ever had problems with funny noises or scratching or it not engaging properly.

so i drive the car back to school, car is acting like it did befor ehte head swap (perfectly fine, still boost creeps but runs like a champ) anyways between classes i decide to go roll around in the parking lot to find a better spot, i engage the clutch and slowly come out of my space, riddin it low about 2500rpms it sounds like my belts are whirring hardcore or something, i put it into second (no scratch) going about 10mph and give it a little gas. now is when i get scared, i hear a loud clanking noise coming out of the passengers side wheel well and i can feel it in the steering wheel and in the shifter. car stayed in gear and held itself in gear just fine tho.

i call fp in a fit and tell them what is going on. i get a callus response of "yeah our head mech. said you really need a new tranny" i told him the car never did it and i hav enever had problems with the transmission. he told me to come down to the shop tomorrow afternoon and he would look everything over. (thas fine with me i can still drive the car ad the problem doesnt seem severe)

so the rest of the afternoon the car never made a single peep like that again, i decided it was just the clutch warming up or something from sitting for 4weeks while the head was swapped.

that night i had to take a chemistry exam. on the way there everything is fine, i forgot my calculator so i actually had to make another trip home and back, i get out of the testing center and decide to stop by a local car meet. i knick the curb as i exit the parking lot and the problems arise worse then ever before

Problems
1.)car makes a constant clanking noise, i seriously thought i was dragging something under the car when i first heard it, sounds like metal on metal.
2.) it kept getting worse, i was coasting in 3rd gear going about 30 mph, when i would give hte car gas it would shutter severely (not bogging) it felt like the engine was knocking hardcore, but the symptoms would go away when i let off the throttle.
3.) stopped at a light i knew i was in for it, i put the car into first and as gingerly as i could, i let the clutch down. i was responded with nothing but clanking, car stayed in gear and wouldnt come out of first. so i turned my car of at the stoplight and waited with the hazards on for about 15minutes for somone to show up or help me push my car.
4.) we push the car back and even though the clutch is engaged (on the floor) it really doesnt want to move. after a little umph the car rolls freely backwards on its own and i got it back into neutral.
5.) under where i had come to rest there was about a quart or so of black black liquid. to me it looked like oil, it had a rich texture and it turned brown where it wasnt thick. i check under the car and the dripping is coming off of the very end of the tranny and spray is all over the passengers side control arm. axle looked fine so that wasnt the problem. on the plastic splash guards, there is alot of oil on them, i run my fingers over them and inspect the liquid, there were tiny metal flakes all in it
6.) pushing the car through the gas station with it fully in neutral i could still hear a faint clanking noise

guys i know this is a long post but i need your help

so your TRANNY decided to eat itself. That REALLY sucks bro. I really don't know what to say other than to see what the shop can do for you since they were the last ones to work on the car BUT, since they only did engine work, it's highly doubtful they'll claim any responsibility.

Did you jack the car up and see what is going on under there? I would inspect it myself and see if i can find anything visually that is going on.

I had almost the exact same problem when my 200k mile tranny ate a hole in its own end case. Time for a rebuild unfortunately.

I know all about transmission problems now that I am on my 3rd transmission. If you have the money, Shepherd does amazing things. If not, you can probably find a 2g 5spd for $150-$300 on the trader.

Sounds like a diff failure. I've seen the Getrag trans go in ways similar to the T350 diff .. pin comes loose, destroys the case.

Eh what do I know anyway.

Sorry to hear it man.

Good choice but Shep is cheaper and has as good if not better quality. You can't go wrong with either though.
