I cracked a piston. This was due to incorrect base timing, which caused detonation at only 11* timing advance. It didn't detonate for long, but the damage has been done (compression test cyl 1 = 76 PSI).
I have another stock block that's ready to drop in, but I'd like to throw a set of forged pistons in there while I'm at it. Does anyone make a forged piston that'll directly work with stock 1990 big rods and stock cylinder bore? If so, are the pistons sized properly with enough clearance for a stock bore cylinder? This block doesn't have time to go to the machine shop.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
BTW- My setup is a complete 1990 6-bolt with ARP studs, HKS 264 cams, EVO 3 16G turbocharger, FMIC, full stand alone fuel & spark, ACT 2600 clutch, aluminum flywheel. These parts are the reason I'm looking for forged pistons. Expecting to run ~20 PSI daily. Anyone ever tried a similar setup on a stock bottom end? Think it'll hold?

Ouch, that sucks. Wiseco and JE have std bore sizes, pretty sure Ross and Arias will too. They will all have specific clearances with JE needing larger clearances. I highly recommend that you still get the block machined if you go with forged pistons, or you may be doing it all over sooner than you'd like. If it can't be machined then just put stock 1g or even 2g pistons back in there.

I don't know the answer to your question about pistons, but there is a guy in NH who has a completly stock bottom end on I think a 93 or 94 TSi AWD who has been running 10's for a while now, and dyno'd at 560 AWHP. He's running an FP3575, tuned with AEM. So, I think as long as the car is tuned properly, the stock block will certaintly handle everything the E316g can throw at it. I will be running the same turbo on a stock 7-bolt bottom end. Hope that helps.

Forgot to mention that the Wiseco and JE pistons will fit the stock rods, not sure about Ross and Arias but I assume they will. 1991 and '92 6-bolt blocks have slightly smaller rods than the '90 blocks but are still a much better option than the 7-bolt rods. I remember seeing a guy at Bandimere in Colorado with a stock 2g block throw a rod out the pan going down the track. He had a small 16G and nitrous and was running consistant 12s before the rods gave way. Ouch!

Yeah. Same here. Stock rebuild on the 4G63 and ballsdeep on the 420A. LOL.
Another question, since this subject seems relavent, 2G pistons need any modifications to mate with 91 rods? I figure a stock rebuild will more than cover my needs for this car, but I am popping for some of the basic upgrades like a 2G manifold, blah, bla, blah.
Pretty simple machining really. I was going to go this route on our 1G, but after I figured the price for the 2g pistons/rings ($300+) plus the price to get the rods macined ($50-$100) I ended up getting Wiseco pistons/rings ($450). I figured the extra little difference is worth it for forged pistons and 9:1 compression ratio. You can also get 8.3:1 Wisecos. The stock big rods have been proven to hold over 400 whp, some claim even 500 whp. I would go ahead and have the balance shafts removed while you're in the rebuild process, and have the machine shop balance everything. I only get OE Mitsu gaskets. Plus get a MLS head gasket too! Oh yeah, some vendors charge extra for the 2g wrist pins but don't mention that on their websites, so keep that in mind when calling around.

Shit. I was hoping it was a cheap fix. Then again, I'll have to see what the Parts Dinosaur charges for stock 2G pistons. His prices are usually excellent and it's been a while since you've been out in the market shopping as far as I know. Shit. I got custom Venolias for $500 shipped. I bet I could scoop up some shitty Wisecos for under $400 if I looked hard enough. (Just wouldn't want to.)
