#7746, "Need advice! Car dont run."

I bought a '91 GST from a guy that I know. The car wasnt running when I got it, but I got it for a good price so I bought it. Well, I put all new gaskets in it, checked the bottom end (with the oil pan off), took the valve cover off and looked to make sure everything appeared to be in working order. The turbo is great, no shaft play or anything. Well, I went to start it after working on it for a while (couple months) but it doesnt start. I checked and it is getting fire to the plugs. Compression is great on it. I took the fuel feed line off, and fuel comes out, but not as i would expect. It just puts out a very weak, little stream. The fuel return doesnt push out much gas while off the car either. I dont hear the fuel pump come on when I turn on the key. Can you hear them on the 1g's? Ive checked the fuses, and all of them are good. It has a 1/4 tank of fuel. I put a new fuel filter on it as well. This is my first 4g63t. Ive had a few 420a car's and know them backwards and forwards, but need a lil help on the 4g63. Thanks for any replies or advice. If I can give any info to better help address what might be wrong then tell me, and Ill try to give more info.

P.S. The car tries to roll over very strongly, but just acts like one that wasn't getting fire or fuel. Thanks again.

Compression numbers won't be accurate with the engine cold, but I doubt that it's anything to worry about.
You should be able to hear the fuel pump kick on when you listen at the filler door with it open and have someoene turn the key on. I don't remember for sure but I don't think you can hear the stock pump inside the car, normally. If you don't hear it then there's a few to check. I would first check the fuel pump control relay. It's under the stereo, you'll have to remove the passenger side center console panel. Do you have a Haynes or Chilton's manual? Those will show you how to check that relay amongst other things to check.
Another thing to check, and I'd do this first, is to make sure that the CAS is plugged into the harness at the firewall. Without it plugged in it'll just crank forever without ever attempting to start.
Like Jeff said, check the caps. You should do this anyway.

We checked the relay and everything related to the fuel pump. Everything checked out fine. Though I think that the problem is the fuel pump. I put my ear to the filler and didn't hear a thing. Also, tried sitting in the back of the car, still nothing. So, I got a walbro 255 w/ install kit that is suppose to be here today.

What is the CAS that you were talking about that needs to be plugged in at the firewall?

Thanks for all the help!

btw, i have both haynes boooks (1g,2g) and the chiltons. lol. Ive read them books so much the last little bit I feel like im in school studying for a big test. later. thanks!!!!!

I would've just picked up/borrowed a stock pump for now. They're cheap enough and then you would've known what the problem was before going and spending money on a FP you don't really need (yet).
Also, with only having 1/4 tank of gas in there for who knows how long (didn't run when you bought it right?) I'd drain that shit...

We took one off of my friends awd tsi but it didnt work either. Turbo DSM's are VERY VERY hard to come by around here. Any parts i have to get, I have to order off the net. I check on a stock pump from advance and they were $108. I got the walbro 255 for $109. I figured that Im going replace it b/c of upgrading anyways, so I figured that I would go ahead and get the pump.

Btw, the inspection sticker was on there from 03. I can only imagine the gas would be bad, but my friend and my dad said that it would be alright. I didnt understand it either. Im gonna put the new pump in, and put NEW gas in it today. Thanks!

you should buy an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator also with a walbro 255 because you will outflow the stock FPR.
