#7695, "Rough Idle, Got car running though!!!!"

Well I finally got my 1g running it took a while with a lot of minor work (am I'm still not anywhere close to having it where I want it). Soon as I got the fuel pump/ gas tank situation straighted out, I saw that some yay-hoo had taken all the injector stem seals out and I was spraying raw gas everywhere. Finally got some from the junkyard that has saved me and cranked it up. It really resisted for a long time. Didnt want to run at all and had ZERO throttle repsonse. After a bit of letting it idle itself out it finally cranked and had throttle response with rough ass idle. I took it around neighborhood for the first time and FELT BOOOOOST!!!

Anyway, it just sputters at ide and jumps RPM's like a bitch. Just wondering if anyone knows any quick checks I can do to figure this out. Tomorrow I am adjusting the BISS screw. Any other suggestions?

Car needs a timing belt but timing apears to be good.

On a side note, I was at the junkyard today looking at injector seals and was looking in the trunk of an old 1g and there was a brand spanking new in the box timing belt for an eclipse DOHC.The lady sold it to me for a dollar!

I love my junkyard www.pullapart.com look up some of those prices, and they have thousands of cars.

I'd probably be cleaning MAS sensor connections and any others related to the throttle body. I'd probably put new plugs in and I would have def. done something with that gas tank man. Seriousley, i wouldn't even have put any fuel in there until it was cleaned out. Think of all that rust in there going through your fuel system emoji

I agree with Blair. If you are running that car with that fucked up fuel tank and gas pump you are in for some serious trouble.

Stop driving it and FEELING BOOST! and fix it first. Once you fix it and get it running properly you can drive it.

I replaced the fuel pump and pick up screen and drained all the gas out but I didnt replace/drop the tank. I guess I need to do that.

pull one spark plug wire at a time and see if the idle changes

Well I was an idiot before because I didnt even look at the timing marks on the cam gears. both marks on the cam gear are sitting at about 2 o'clock (no where close to lining up). I guess this accounts for the bad idle.

My car ran, but shitty around the neighborhood and I have no idea what jackass had it before me and messed it up.

How bad do you predict the damage is?

I don't know. It's kind of hard to guess the damage. Get a Leakdown done and it'll tell you before removing the head.

BUT YEA< even though you chanegs the FP and screen or whatever.....the gas tank was probably JUST AS RUSTY. DOn't cha think ??? emoji

I am in the works of changing the gas tank. I have a guy with a good one for 40 bucks. I am buying that.

The more I think about it the more I just dont think the valves would be screwed up because I am not 100% sure the timing is messed up. The timing marks are at the same angle and I can see where someone has changed the timing before (the bolts on the cam gears show signs they have been removed) I really dont know anymore?

When I drove the car around the neighborhood it seemed to have full power. It was boosting and everything.

At the local junkyard I can get a complete non-turbo head for 40 bucks and I was just going to go ahead and change cams and swap heads.

And also, how do I perform a leakdown test??

Funny how a 500 dollar car turned into an 800 dollar car in one weekend and it's about to turn into a 1000 dollar car probably next weekend!
