#6019, "bye bye tranny"

pops out of 4th gear, grinds badly in first and second. I have a 90 awd. I read somewhere that theres variations in transmissions, something about 22 spline or 23 spline. Is this true of the 90's or is it a difference between the 90s and 91+s

shep is taking care of mine whenever it gets unbearable. give it to them, they will hook you up with a good tranny.

yes deffinatly send it to shep! he does great work and knows what he is doing. i got the GVR4 1st gear from him and it feels sooooo bad ass! i had the same problem with the 4th gear popping out too but dont' know anything about the 22 and 23 splines???

1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX: K&N Filter, John Sheppard built transmission with GVR4 1st gear, autometer boost gauge, "free mods", Greddy type-s BOV, broken shifter

Yes, there are several differences (mostly internal) between 90 and 91+ transmissions. Most people recommend upgrading to a '91+ tranny if you have a '90 and the transmission goes. I am doing this right now. It'll work BEST if you get the '91+ shift linkage and shifter mechanism as well, but I've heard that you can get by using the '90 linkage and mechanism and putting the '90 transmission bracket on the '91 transmission.

im pretty sure the 22 spline/23 spline is just for the number of splines for the the output on the transfer case(i.e. match it up to how many splines your driveshaft has) i could be wrong though. dont do anything until jeff offers up his two cents.

All 90's and some 91's have a 22 spline output shaft from the Tranny to the X-fer case. The rest of 91's and 92's and up have 23 splines. That should be right.

Everry year has 21 splines from the drive sfat to the x-fer case. Only the tranny/x-fer case meeting point has variation.

Also, Shep will be rebuilding my (and Jeff's) transmission within the next month or so. I fourth the Shep sentiment.

It's running again shitheads.
