#5902, "what tranny will work?"

there are some disgusting noises coming from my transmission.. and i'm sure i'll need a new one or a rebuild... but i dont have much money right now... so i'll probably just end up getting a used tranny and putting it in for a while.. so... what kind of transmission can i use on my 98 gsx? can i use a 1G awd tranny? or only 2G?

and from looking on the parts trader.. some people say they have "switchable trannies" what are those all about? will they work?

thanks a lot guys

No you can only use 2g trannys. The 1g and 2g trannies are NOT interchangable.

Also good luck finding a 2g awd tranny. That is prabably the hardest thing you can find used on a dsm. Believe me I tried........

not to be a cynical bastard, but if you think your tranny is that bad you may want to start looking simultaneously for a used tranny and/or a CHEAP beater car, then save up $$ and send your tranny to john shepard. A few of the guys on the board just got their trannies back from him, see if they'll post how they feel about them....

The only tranny you can use is a 2g AWD.

Shepherd does amazing work.

1g tranny with a 6 bolt.

Tranny I got from Shep is fantastic. I recommend him highly, exclusive over anywhere else.

Doesnt TRE make the 1g awd tranny fit the 2g when they build you a trans? Granted its 3000. but i thought all they do is oval one of the mount holes out. I guy near me in Joliet has one, had to wait 6 months for it. If i am correct (will have to ask him) its a 1g AWD trans converted to a 2g FWD car.

Maybe its a 2g awd made to fit in a 2g fwd not sure but i know one of the mount holes are modified, then again it could be the starter bolt too i cant remember. Anyone look into TRe before?

Actually I am pretty sure you have to use the 2G tranny with a 6 bolt in a 2g. The 2g tranny has 3 mounts on it while the 1g tranny has only one. (7 bolt block has 1 mount, 6 bolt has 3 mounts).

I may be wrong though. I haven't yet found a reason to do much research into a 6 bolt swap. I think they are silly.

ok just looked up TRE and it looks liek the AWD trans for FWD dsm is like for liek in terms of years. Its not 3000. either, price is down to 2000. for a 1g and 2300. for 2g and 300 off if you send in your old trans. Not a bad deal really

Hmm. dont even consider myself a 4G63 guy anymore, but cant believe you guys dont know this:

A 2G awd car with even a 6 bolt swap CANNOT use a 1G tranny because the 2G tranny has front and rear mounts bolted to the aluminum Bell Housing as opposed to the 1G tranny , which does not have those bolts; they have bolts to the engine.
Also keep in mind that if you have a 95 2G awd, you can only use up to 96 1/2 as far as trannies go. Anything later in years, and you have to use the newer transfer cases as they are different.

Agreed. I have a 95 (2g) Talon tsi awd with a 6 bolt swap (jdm gvr4) and am using my 95 (2g) tranny.

In short ... 2g w/ a 6 bolt w/ a 2g trans.

What else works ... I do not know. I only know what I have emoji

Turn around for a Shep tranny is usually a week from when he gets it. It takes longer in transit than it does for him to work on it. Just call and you'll talk to him or his right hand guy directly and they will let you know exactly how long to expect to wait. Jeff and I had our done within five business days of his receiving them.

Also, you are all right about the tranny mount issue. My bad.
