Probably shifter cable slop, imo, but I'd like to be sure.
Started last night. When shifting into 3rd or 4th, it's almost as if there is something blocking the lever from going into the gate. It's *almost* as if I have to go "wide" with the shift when aiming for the gear.
Trans fluid is likely 2+ years old. Spent a lot of that time just sitting (before I bought the car). We left it in there after the rebuild in case seals had dried out - we didn't want to be leaking the good stuff everywhere. I have BG Synchroshift ready to go in as soon as I get a chance.
Synchros in 1, 2, and 3 will *sometimes* grind a bit. As usual, 1st is worst. Popped out of gear on me once back when it first fired up, but no problems since.
Think this might be due to stale fluid and possibly a rotting rubber grommet on a shift cable? So sayeth the newbie, "I don't have a lot of time to search."

well since no one else stepped up, I'll take a stab at it. sounds like bushings gone bad, especially since the car has been sitting in the desert for so long. Should be easy enough to check out and almost as easy to fix. You can also see if one of the roll pins on the tranny side shift levers is coming out. A wobbly lever could do the same thing.

That's what I was suspecting, Greg, but I was kinda posting to get some backup (and possibly generate some traffic through here). Apprecaite the head's up.
Turns out she was about 2qts low on transmission fluid, and the fluid she did have was absolutely vile. Like someone wrung out a corpse. Vile. Shifts much better now.

I think Im having a somewhat similar issue, waiting on my bg synchrostuff to come in. someitmes my first pops out, and when im shifting or just driving releasing the clutch at around 15 mph i hear a light hear if the tranny is agonizing, no grinding or or mechanical noises though, hope the fluids will do it though , cool posting on the 4g6 section as opposed to the NT section. Im going to be posting alot more here )

Pop outs are not good. Let's hope that it is fluid BUT...... Check the cable slop to see if she is engaging all the way. Generally, pop outs are inside. Possible bearing for the shafts etc.
good luck

that bg syncrostuff works miracles! did my tranny fluid change yesterday. Shifting is way smoother, no more hummming noise. and most importantly no more popping out!

make sure your shifter base is adjusted correctly, and make sure the bolts on the tranny that hold the cables are tight. mine shifted like yours when they were loose. didnt know till i had someone sit inside it and move the shifter around.
