i know about the whole year dif. with mounts and spline count/ swapping output shafts but since the 2g awd trans is so rare and crazy expensive, has anyone tried buying a 1g trans and putting the 2g bell housing on it so it'll bolt into a 2g?

JUST KIDDING! i just read that the internals of a 91-94 are the same as the 2g but the 90 is slightly different so the entire contents have to be swapped and not just some of the parts. so, the answer is yes. the 2g-gsx guys have a cost efective tranny. it's as simple as a bell housing swap.

i have a 98 gsx with a 6bolt so instead of swaping bells, i just put the 90' trans in there and customized mounts off the block. the 1990 awd tranny lasted for about 6 launches. first 5 at 4500rpm then i launched at 6k and the thing went "kaplooie". on jacks the rear wheels spin but no front and it makes a grind sound sometimes. the car will drive under about 2% throttle. any more and it neutralizes. it doesn't pop out of gear though. any ideas on what i broke? i'll be tearing it down later this week.

ok, i pulled it. if i put in gear and spun both sides of the diff, the input shaft wouldn't spin. was i abusing the trans or does everyone launch like this?
