#2824, "slight vibrating in rear pass. wheel, question regarding" Dec-01-04 04:33 AM by soulcontroller
ok, im having a little issue with my rear passenger side wheel. now i know that the rim is slightly bent, and when i had it balanced it wobbled pretty good... im going to have to wait till the summer to put on a new set of rims that arent bent, and see if that clears up the problem. people driving next to and behind me said they cannot see the wheel wobbling at all.
so im not sure if the bent rim is the culprit. when driving i hear a rhythmic 'wobble' i dont know how to describe it. it almost sounds like the wheel is rubbing something, but its not. going expressway speeds 60-70 i can feel it in the steering wheel.
i took the wheel off and tried to wobble it (top and bottom) for a wheel bearing check, and it was solid as a rock. checked the dust shields over the rotors and thats not it. all of the suspension looks good back there. new struts as well.
so if you guys have any suggestions, i would appreciate it. i dont know if the bent rim along with some slight camber ( wheels like / \ ) would do it, but the car is not lowered...
thanks.

Are you AWD? If not, put the spare on it, or borrow a fellow DSM'ers same wheel, and see if the wobble is still there. That will help to narrow things down a fair amount...
EDIT: if its the AWD car you're talking about, try to find a VERY simliar wheel/tire size and do that...don't (not that you would) put the donut on

well i was wondering about putting a different set of wheels in the back...
ive got a set of 17s with 2 really bad tires i could put on. a smaller tire, but larger wheel. whats on there now are some pretty big 16s, i forget the numbers.
would putting different tire sizes in the front/back be bad because its awd? that i wasnt sure about so i didnt do it.

you have to run the same size tires front and back if AWD. What you could do is switch it with the front tire and see if it does the same thing but up front. At least that would tell you if it's just the wheel or some other rear suspension related issue.

well, i rotated the wheels and its not the actual bent rim. it was still doin it.
so my guess is that its the wheel bearing. ill be changing that out in the summertime :\ any suggestions on if i should replace any other parts while im down there? any snags i should expect along the way?
new springs are going in at the same time...
