I was thinking about this today in class.
With all the 6 bolt swaps going on and the general disinterest in the 7bolt, and since the engine is 15 years old, what kind of timeline is there on engine availability? As in, how long before 1g/2g's become extinct?
The reason I ask this is because I'm seriously considering buying a 1g for graduation and slowly moving my stuff over to that car, then selling the 2g and buying a beater.

I have thought about the same thing here and there. I really doubt the 4g63 will become hard to find. look at all the cars that got the motor or a variation of it. Mistu p/u's, hyundai's, the 1g/2g, the 3g has a similer bottom end, then as stated above the JDM motors imported. The idea of dropping a blown motor and throwing another one with little miles may slowly deminish but the block being available and rebuildable will be around like the chevy 350. Future rebuilds may require more work but that is just a natural progress of used motors.
I think the 1g body will become extinct before the motor ever will.

Who said there is a General Disinterest in the 7 bolt. DSMLink and NABR boards have tons of people going long distances with the 7 bolt engine. I myself plan on taking my 7 bolt to the max. I don't think there is a disinterest in the 7 bolt engine other then the online community.

I think after 15 years of them not using the motor castings anymore the patent for the cast of the block expires. Then anyone can manufactor the blocks. So there might be aftermarket blocks out there soon that will be built stronger to withhold more power.
Theres a company that just started manufacturing the 67, 68, & 69 cameros again because the patent on the body panel stamps expired. That again leaves them open to anyone who wants to make a little money if the demand is out there.

Great point, I forgot about the patent laws. Hopefully the cost of production won't be so high.

If theres a demand out there for the block then Im sure they will be built. They are already casting better manifold and other parts for the 4g63. So why not build a better block when it can be done legally. That is unless mitsu decides to renew thier patent, which is highly unlikely they would spend the money on something they either dont use anymore or isnt worth spending the money on. the evo designed 4g63 is much better than the previous 4g63. Thats obviously an opinion, but I dont think they would renew the patent for such on old design.

I can see the Evo's going on to become classic but beyond that, i can't see it for DSM's. Because of that, I can see people try to continue to make money off the 4g63. But i think the answer to this question will depend on where the car market itself goes.

what would one need to keep a car going forever? just replacing bushings and general maintenance? Would replacing the bushings with like a prothane kit make the car drive like it was new?

I dont see the metal wearing out but the rubber bushings and the lack of maintenace some people do that eventually starts chasing you down where you are going deep into the cars cavities to get rid of rust. body bushings would be the average maintenance though to keep the ride nice. I predict eventually you will have a couple companies make entire kits like they do for antiques.

The 4G motor will live on. Theyre especially nice on the Evos. A 2 liter that can handle 500 hp on the stock bottom end is nothing to laugh at. It looks like the only change that Mitsu is going to make is putting a MIVEC head on it.
