#2034, "Has anybody seen the EvoIII 16g GT?"

I searched but didn't find anything on it. Is it just the exact same thing, just made by a different company and already ported with the 34mm flapper? Or what's different?

Any horror stories heard about them? lol

EVO III GT Turbo
These are not made by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Same dimension and spec as the
MHI made EVO 16G. Already ported and comes with a 35mm big flapper. Comes
with a 12 months/12,000 miles unconditional warranty. Sorry we don't offer clipping
on EVO III GT turbo.

EVO III GT $580

Taken from RRE's website, this help you out?
http://www.roadraceengineering.com/eclturbos.htm

On another turbo question... will an Apex'i Turbo fit on an Eclipse? The new RX-6 for the EVO 8 caught my eye, but aren't those turbos mounted differently? JW...

'95 Copper GS-T "Serena" Stage 3 CM Clutch w/alumin flywheel, Injen Intake, Apex'i I/C pipes + Twin Chamber BOV, Defi D-Series Boost + A/F gauges...pushing 17psi!

Apparently the GT is a Chinese-made knockoff. Get the real thing.

evo 8 turbos won't fit the eclipse. I'm pretty sure they scroll differently, but don't quote me on that. any other turbo will, though, as long as you have the right manifold.

Theres alot of different stories about the GT. SBR used to say it was made in china, now they say Japan. The company who makes them claims Taiwan. Also, they claim that the SBR write up is fake. Buschur and RRE stand behind the GT, SBR doesnt. The MHI EvoIII is obviously proven, the GT isnt really yet. Buschur claims they have sold over 50 GT's and customers have only said positive things about it. There is one dyno of a guy with the GT putting down 285whp and 295 TQ with at only 17psi on his 2g which isnt bad at all. Some say to trust in Buschur and RRE, some say to trust in SBR.

In the end, it's really what you want. If you plan to run the turbo @20psi or higher constantly, theres no need for the flapper and you shouldnt get boost creep at that level. The flapper will only hurt at that level of boost(boost falls). Same thing with port job. If you plan to run it @20psi+ porting isnt really necessary. I believe the fastest time on the MHI Evo 16g right now is 11.8 @117mph on a full weight 2g GSX. The guy who owns/races the car does not have a flapper or port work done and actually hates it. He had a ported 16g before that with flapper mod and says its a waste of money because he ran better times without the port/flapper mod. Anyway, point is, if you plan to run 20psi+ then just get the MHI EvoIII 16g with no port or flapper and it will cost you about 580.

If you plan to run less than 20psi than porting and flapper mod would help, so the Evo GT might be a good option at the same price of 580. However, you pay less at your own risk. Personally, if i were to run the turbo at 18psi or less and i was on a budget, i would consider the GT only after its been on the market longer and has more test mules. However, i would rather buy a non ported, no flapper mod EvoIII for 580 and just keep the boost at 20psi.

How is the record on the Evo3 16G only 11.8 when regular Big 16G's have run low 11's? Hell the 14B has gone mid 11's by itself.

EVOIII will do 11's all day long. As for the 14B, you have to understand that Leons car is in a class all it's own. He may have had a 14b on it when it ran that time but it's a BUILT car. He slaps on a 14B when "in between" turbos. There are others who have gone fast on 14b's but their car is GUTTED. Almost to the point of Curt Browns. hehe.

I just didn't know what the 155 was for, but I'm guessing it's his place number in the times list on the site.

16g's are the worst upgrade for a 2nd gen imo. For the money you spend to get it to work properly, there are much better turbos out there.

Agreed, Even though nowadays you don't need an expensive install kit, you may be better off just getting a Big-T28 if you want big 16-type power plus it's a direct bolt on.

I completely disagree with this statement. If this is true, then why do so many more people install a 16-g over a t-28? This is a quote from newengdsm.org from Josh Wingell who ran the 11.8 on the evo III:

"I just found a log on the DSMLink forums that shows that the Big T28 spools up almost identically to the Evo III 16G, too. In fact, I'd give the edge to the 16G since it seems to hit 5psi sooner than the T28.

Given the fact that the Evo III 16G can flow as much as ~43lb/min, and the T28 can only flow ~36lb/min, I think it is a no-brainer. 16G all the way.

Just make sure that you get the real deal, and not one of the Evo III 16G GT copies that are being sold by Buschur, Turbochargers.com, RRE, and companies and individuals on Ebay!

The "install kit" for a 16G isn't much different from a T28 install kit, anyway. Both turbos need a new oil feed line. Both need new gaskets. But the 16G needs a different compressor outlet pipe."

The fastest time i could find for the big t-28 is:
12.221 112.76 7.768 90.07 1.714 99 Eclipse GSX FP T2828 NO Jeremy Brandt

I'm putting my evo III on next week, along with many other goodies, so we will see how the ole 16 g does. I don't think the big t-28 is a bad choice at all, i was actually going to get one myself (until every one and their mother convinced me otherwise). its just a matter of opinion i guess, but to say that the "16g is the worst upgrade" is just ignorant...

I am glad you found a bunch of quotes and all but your money is better spent elsewhere.

I also love when people post times to back up there claims...do you know what goes into getting a 16g to run those times? And secondly i never said it was a bad turbo to being with. I said for the money spent to get a 16 to run right, you can get a better turbo. This is for 2nd gen only. Figure price of turbo, install kit, port job and upgraded flapper or External wastegate setup to prevent creep. Why purchase a turbo that you have to do all that to?

Edit: I wouldn't use a t-28 either.

Actually a port job is free if you have the understanding of how to do it yourself. Same with the flapper installation, which also isn't necessary. You don't need an external to kill creep either. A properly ported internal wastegate is perfectly capable of holding boost on a Big 16G.

The Evo III 16G is a great turbo and I would recommend it to anybody. Not everyone wants the power of a 20G or larger turbo.

For example, my college roommate ran a Big 16G on his 97 TSi AWD Auto. He ran a consistent 12.0 at 117mph over and over again for months. Besides a shift kit, his tranny and torque converter were completely stock.

16g turbos are plenty powerful and fast for pretty much anyone. If you want mid 11's or faster, or some insane highway top end, then get larger. If not, the 16G is for you.

Which is exactly why I chose the evo III, since this is my daily driver, I can't afford to run a bigger turbo (until i get another car that is). Im on the stock motor, so i dont want to push it too much anyways.

Port jobs on 16g's are usually hit or miss....and for most people its a miss. If i were to start over again, my first turbo would have been a 50 Trim for my second gen. I don't see the need to put that much effort into a turbo on a second gen. 50 Trim is a bolt on and cost about the same in price. Charlie went 12.8 on his at 20psi with no tune, pump gas and full weight.....lets see a 16g do that. They are not bad turbos, but on a 2g you have other issues to consider with them when it comes to performance.

I LOVE my EVOIII 16G. I did a LOT of research before deciding on it and am completely satisfied with the results.
I think for someone who wants a daily driver that can take "just about any production car" on the street today, be reliable and have some fun at the track too, it's the perfect choice.
It's one of the most inexpensive turbos out there. Combine that with the fact that you need minimal supporting mods and little tuning, it's a great choice.
