Is there a brand of piston rings that are superior to the others? I need to replace the rings in my 90' 6 bolt. And also, since I'm already in there, is there anything I can do to make my bottom end stronger aside from aftermarket pistons and rings? And somebody told me that certain years had stronger rods or/and pistons, is this true? Thanks.

My current rings are shot. The other day I went for a little drive, when I got back the dipstick had popped out and oil had blown everywhere. I did a compression test and got 125-110-30-100.
Edit: I just bought the car about a week ago, I knew there'd be problems, like the tranny needs rebuilt, but oh well. When I get everything working right the turbo all wheel drive should be pretty nice. On a side note, I don't suppose anybody would have a spare TPS sittin around?

30? You need a full rebuild.
Stock rings are best to use, but just do a full rebuild. Replacing just the rings won't be enough. If you have 30psi in one cylinder, chances are you will need a lot more than just new rings.

Yes, I realize I'll need to do more than just Replacing the rings, however I was just asking about the rings. But while I'm at it, what all would I need to do? So far I've figured, bore 25 over, get 25 over rings, replace bearings, and get a full engine gasket set. Am I leaving out anything extremely important? Thanks for all the help.

Yeah, no DSM engine is ever really bored 25 over. 20 is the standard unless the block is really fuxored, then you go with 40. You might as well get new pistons too. They are around $200 for all 4. If your bottom end is in that bad of a condition, the head is probably pretty messed up too. Might want to look into that while you are there.

Yea sorry I ment . 20 over, I wasn't paying much attention when I posted. I forgot to mention after the 30psi reading I put a cap full of oil in the spark-plug hole, and got a steady 60psi. Ok, so you think I'll need new pistons too? What else should I look for?

Basically if you think you need a rebuild, take the whole thing apart, or take the head off and check the piston surfaces. Just poke around and see if there is any scoring on the cylinder walls, and check the head gasket as well. At this point, if you think something in the engine is blown, check everything. Get a factory service manual, read vfaq and just take your time.
There is no simple answer of what to look for. With compression that low in one cylinder, it really will take quite a bit of looking to find all the problems.
That is what 30 PSI in one cylinder looked like for me.

1g rods are stronger than 2g rods and 2g pistons are stronger than 1g pistons. The 1g rods are just beefier in general. Mitsubishi kind of did a weird thing whent hey switched from 1g to 2g. In the 1g these these are stronger/better: BOV, Rods, Throttle Body, Turbo etc...
Then in the 2g, they made those components worse, but made these better: MAS, Pistons, Throttle Body Elbow, suspension, etc.

Ok, so the 2G pistons are higher compression. Does this explain the HP difference? Also is it a safe bet to say I'll probably need at least one new piston. If that's the case I'll just buy 2G pistons, but are the rings still the same? Thanks for all the help so far, keep it coming.
