I finally got the valve spring compressor and modded it to work with my 4g63 head. Now I have all the valves out of it. Is there a secret to getting the valve seals out... Those fuckers are a pain to pull out. Also is there any way I can clean the carbon off of the head or should I just take it to a machine shop and have them clean it. I want to port and polish it a little while I have it apart.
Does this looks like it has 184k miles on it...
There is also a little area thats pitted a little between the top 2 ports (exhuast). You can see it in the pics. Is this a problem. Sorry the pic is kinda blurry. Hard to get a good close up...
and heres some pics of the work bench I built last weekend... Good place to work and Cold Beer only about 3 feet away. lol
The pistons on the shelf are my 1g pistons and rods. There are 2g pistons and rods in the box on top of the shelves. How much should I expect to pay to have the 1g rods fitted to the 2g pistons?
Let me know...

Head looks great, pitting is foreign object, maybe spark plug electrode or something. As long as the valve seats aren't jacked, you should be fine. There are probably matching pits on the piston top if you scrape the carbon away.
If there are no matching pits, it may just be carbon that flaked off.
As far as the valve stem seals, I just mangled them with right-angle pliers. One was really stuck, so I fabricated a little puller. Just 1" wide x 12" long steel piece, with 1" folded over on each end. Dremeled a little notch in one of the 1" flaps. Something like
V________|
And hit the non-notched side with a hammer. I'm sure this was overkill, but it worked.
If you take your head to be p-n-p'd they will clean it for you. If you wanna do it on your own, just fill a rubbermaid tub with oileater and water, and dunk it for 15-30 mins, scrub with wooden brush, dunk, rinse.

The pits are between the exhuast ports and dont look like anything foreign got in there.
The 1st and last cylinder areas have the same pits in the same area, but the one closest to the cam gears is the worse. I got a better pic of it over the weekend. Ill post it up as soon as I get home to see. I cleaned the area up with a dremel and wire brush.
It almost looks like a lot of little balls of solder dripped into a hole. Maybe a bubble when the head was cast.
I dunno. Ive started looking for a bare 6 bolt head for the time being.

Definately looks like something broke off and was bouncing around in there. I had piston come apart on my dad and I's race car, and the broken off chunks did similar damage to the cylinder head(only much worse) I think I paid Brodix like $150 to weld and re-cc the combustion chamber to fix it. It was worth it on $3800 heads, but maybe not on an Eclipse. If you are really concerned about it, check with a welding shop.
