#9822, "Went down hard on my bike...hit a pedestrian"

I was coming home from NYC last night on my bike doing about 55 on the thruway.
Out of nowhere this guy is running across the lanes (theres 9 total lanes split by three dividers)
I saw him...but I had no chance to veer out cause cars were in the other lane so i tried my best to steer right but he froze and tried to run backwards and I hit him head on. I sguess I slowed it down to 40 or so when I breaked.
He flew into the left lane close to the guard rail lane, I highsided into my windshield, breaking it with my chest and the bike and me slid. I slid about 100-150 feet, the bike went about 500 feet and stopped by the guardrail.
I think I blacked out for a minute cause my whole side of my helmet is scratched bad.
All I remember was I was facing traffic in the middle lane and I looked up and car was heading toward me. Luckly I rolled out of the way cause he didnt see me.
I thought the guy was dead cause he wasnt moving, but I woalked over to him and dragged him to the divider out of the left lane.
Then he started screaming so I know he was alive thank God.
Last I heard of him was he had to go into surgery and they put him on morphine and somethign about his stomach going up into his chest.
I got bruised chest, swollen forearm, skinned knee, shouldr and stiches on my finger.
I was wearing my jacket and helmet and gloves though so thats what saved me.

First my firends came to the scene cause I nextel'd them. The like 15 minutes later cops, ambulance firetrucks came. One of my friends that rides wanted to pick up my helmet and gloves for me but one cop said no, and my friend told him he knew me, and the cop was like "well your friend shouldnt have been hotdogging down the highway"
(I have a Katana so thats not really possible and I dont wheelie or go that fast. I've got only a year under my belt)
Anyway my friend talked back to the cop cause I think he knew him from highschool, and the cop calmed down.
Most of them didnt know what happened. They thought the guy and I were on the bike together, they thought he was riding and I was in a car driving etc.
I dunno what the hell that guy was thinking trying to run across nine lanes of highway traffic. I think he was trying to get to the bust stop on the other side or something who knows. I'm still in alot of pain but they said Im lucky cause im pretty healthy and strong.

Glad to hear you and the pedestrian are okay. Not so lucky in my area, about a month ago a biker hit a pedestrian at 130mph head on. The guy was crossing a narrow stretch of road and it only took him a few steps before he got hit, with that amount of speed the biker didnt have time to brake or pretty much do anything. Both biker and pedestrian died instantly. Talk about the wrong place at the wrong time. Just imagine u start crossing the road and look far down the road and u see something coming and in 2 seconds its right in front of you.

I know. Some of my friends riding friends I heard they said if it was them they'd have gotten out of the way. But I know thats BS cause I know how they ride on that stretch. They go like 90 even +100 and they also wheelie and stuff. And I was slowing down to get off the exit. I think the way it was so bad lit, even in my car I mighta still not been able to avoid him without hitting a car in another lane.
I have no idea how the guys doing. I just heard that from his relative who called in on the cell phone the cops stuffed in my pcoket thinking it was mine. The doctor wouldnt tell us how he was but I know he was in surgery for 5 hours as I spent the night there.
The guy in the BMW in the far right lane that flagged down incoming cars and called 911 told my friend he almost hit that guy too. He had pulled off to the side.
What I'm worried about now is the legal stuff and bills. Who knows if his family might try to sue me including the state or whatever. I'm not too keen on this stuff..

Don't worry about the legal stuff, highways are for vehicles, not pedestrians playing "Frogger" with their own lives. I know it sucks me saying that, but it is completely true. I hope this guy pulls through and all is fine, but there are no pedestrian crosswalks on a highway.

You made out great on this. My dad's boss was riding with my dad and was going around a turn at MAYBE 45mph and his front wheel caught a piece of plywood. My dad's boss was found around 100 feet from where HE hit the guardrail and slid on it, the bike went over and down a ravine. My dad's boss was in critical condition for around a week... he had to be air-lifted to a hospital an hour and a half away and could not be flown back to Chicago... he was messed up very badly (bones and muscle exposed)... you were very lucky. It sucks hearing about this sort of thing, and it hits home too.

I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery.

Man...a few months ago in my area some guys were out riding the country roads, one on a busa and one on a r1...well they decided to head back and the guy riding the busa had gotten behind...so he speeds up to catch up and the guy on the r1 had been stopped in front of an elementary school because all the buses were leaving and all the kids being picked up..the guy on the busa came over a hill or something and didnt have any time to react and rear-ended his buddy at over 180 mph...needless to say they both died instantly, there were no bikes left at all, and a whole lot of small children saw it...it was horrible

Glad you got out of it so well, just minor injuries and stuff. Try not to feel too bad about the guy, you did everything you could to prevent it from happening.
Kinda funny how we always talk about how dumb deers and squirels are when they freeze in the headlights, and then when it happens to a human, same reaction.
If for some reason they do try to sue you, I'd demand a toxicology report from the guy, what kind of crackhead do you have to be to run across the highway!
