#7810, "Gas price idea"

Somebody sent me an email with an idea on how to lower the gas prices. It seems like a good idea, but there has to be enough people to do it for it to work. If everybody would stop buying gas from the 2 major oil companies (exxon and mobil), then after a period of time they would have no choice but to lower there prices. Everybody would then have to follow suit. The only thing is, we can't buy gas from them until it hits an acceptable level. Sounds like a good plan to show them that the buyer controls the market, not the seller. We just have to get enough people to do it.

I realize it is a fairly old idea, just reiterating. I think it's the best idea out there right now, and with enough people it could work. Why not give it a try and keep it up. If not, the prices are just going to go higher.

Its a bad idea, always has been a bad idea, and always will be a bad idea.

It would in essence have the opposite effect...

Quoted:

"A boycott of a couple of brands of gasoline won't result in lower overall prices. Prices at all the non-boycotted outlets would rise due to the temporarily limited supply and increased demand, making the original prices look cheap by comparison. The shunned outlets could then make a killing by offering gasoline at its "normal" (i.e., pre-boycott) price or by selling off their output to the non-boycotted companies, who will need the extra supply to meet demand. The only person who really gets hurt in this proposed scheme is the service station operator, who has almost no control over the price of gasoline."

All the gasoline in the country is pooled together in a pipe line and distrubuted throughout the country. I dont think its going to work by just doing it to a couple of brands.

They cant lower prices, they have to pay the same price increase that we do. I believe they only make about 5 cents on every gallon sold. I have a solution, someone needs to "off" half of china's population. They are more oil dependent then we are and their economy is growing at a 10% clip. Stop making babies damn it!

Oh c'mon. You at LEAST have to say he is doing his best to give good gas prices after every liberal complained he waged a war based on oil.

True, however it doesn't help that there is a growing demand for oil. It grows everyday and China is a big reason. Supply hasn't gone up, and I don't think it will.

This may be politically incorrect, but if we can go into an established country and overthrow it's government, then we should also take that country's resources. American's are dying for the citizens' of that country's freedom. If they can't fight for their freedom (and don't appreciate us doing it for them), then we should look at our own interests. I know many won't agree with it, but that's my opinion on it.

Does anyone else think that this president has his hands in the oil industry making a profit for himself and/or his friends? I mean, prices have gone up in his terms more than any other president.

Seriously you guys need to read some shit before making stupid ass comments like that. Its just not just about consumption you have to also look into what portion of the oil the big consuming country's use is their own.. and Once again we are #1 (which in this case is not good as it means we are the worst) compared to China who is #3. Stop blaming outher countries for shit you guys don't seem to know anything about.
If an argument is going to be made, make semi educated one atleast.

Now as to the price of oil being higher..one of the main reasons been given byt the big oil company's is the "sudden" mandatory change over to ethanol.
Personaly I think its just another lame excuse like last years "Hurricane" excuse and then they go and post the highest profit margine ever.
I'm willing to bet Refineries are not even close to be at max production.. just holding off to make prices go up along side their paychecks. Again IMO.

There is a company right down the road from me making electric vehicals.
Support for companies like this is what is needed

Your a fuckin asshat! I dont need to do research before posting a FACT like china's economy growing at a RECORD rate. Law of supply and demand and yes we may be the most oil dependent but at the rate china is raising the DEMAND it wont be that way for long. Jesus christ, it was more of joke then anything. Dont get your panties in a bunch. Its obvious by reading what you have posted so far, that your "research" is coming from the "talking head" liberal media outlets. Let me guess, you were holding a sign that said "no war for oil" with your liberal buddies last year. "dont seem to know anything about"...ok. typical

Wasn't the price per barrel in the mid/early 80's close to the same it is now, or within 5-10 bucks or so?

What pisses me off is the record profits. Their greed is clearly shining through.

I say we go Fight Club on the oil companies.

Ok nevermind...obviously you cant read or something. I did site a fact regarding China's economy. You need to do some research yourself. Its NOT an excuse it IS one of many reasons why the supply is too short for the demand. And yes liberals are to blame for a lot of the piss ass whining going on in this country today.
This chart speaks for itself.

LOl u crack me up dude..
no one is disputing the fact that china is modernizing and thus its economy is growing.
But to say that that is the reason for our current rapid increase in Oil prices is outright ignorant.
that graph you just posted suffices to show that Even with its "rapid" growth, Chinas' oil consumption is minimal compared to Ours.
Take a look at

Next Class is at 4pm. Thank you. emoji

EDIT:
Ohh and Jeff, I agree with what you said, except that I really doubt the current existing refineries are operating at close to maximum capacity to require the building of more. Although that is just my suspicion.

Are you still just not getting the fact that i said its ONE of the reasons. hello. I simply backed up my "joke" and the FACT i stated regarding Chinas economy growing at an unbelievable rate thus creating a huge demand on top of our own. You said twice that i dont state facts when i clearly do if you would just try to comprehend what your reading. I never said anything about them being above the US on oil consumption. Let it go man. Sorry i dont attend special ed classes so i wont be joining your next class.

I read just fine.. you just forget what you write....
Original post to refresh your memory:
"They cant lower prices... I have a solution, someone needs to "off" half of china's population. They are more oil dependent then we are and their economy is growing at a 10% clip. Stop making babies damn it!"

My initial asking for proof was related to the accusation of China being more dependant on oil than the US. Thus my pointing out the rate of consumption/production of oil.

My second remark on the non-factual comments made was due to your following statement:
"..your "research" is coming from the "talking head" liberal media outlets. Let me guess, you were holding a sign that said "no war for oil" with your liberal buddies last year. "dont seem to know anything about"...ok. typical"

One open space left in the class! make sure to bring your "helmut"

I like high gas prices. I like to see SUV drivers spending $80 at the pump. It's one more thing that will finally slap the last generation's excess spending habits, and burst our housing bubble. I want inflation to eat away at my school loans too.

the higher gas prices go, the more cost effective running our cars with corn will be. then we will buy less and less middle east terror-oil. I'm sick of the U.S. feeding the pitbulls. I wish we would just switch over to e85 (not gonna happen tho anytime soon.) and let all those OPEC nations eat their oil. hey wow, you guys have a bunch of black ooze under your sand dunes. maybe you can find a way to turn it into food

we don't need gasoline. the sun makes all the energy we need. cutting back on our use through efficiency makes a whole lot more difference then getting more of a cheaper supply of oil

Even though I do agree supply and demand is a part of rising gas prices, there is also a lot of political BS involved. Another factor people dont look at it rising gas prices make North American oil more profitable. Our oil is generally harder to find and refine thus making it less profitable and more expensive to produce then Middle Eastern oil. So when prices rise North American oil is profitable.
