Last night, the IR receiver for my Philips LCD HDTV crapped the bed... No more remote control. Time for this Walmart extended service plan to show me it was worth it. $1K for a TV lasting just over 2 years? Disappointing...

More info, after going online to review my warranty/service plan:

So let's examine the timeline:
TV purchase was 02/20/09.
Manufacturer labor warranty expired 05/19/09.
Walmart 2 yr service plan kicks in 05/20/09, and expired 05/20/11.
TV failure was yesterday, 05/21/11. WHAT. THE. FUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

My blood pressure just went through the roof. I am about to empty a magazine into something near me...

After some searching, it appears to be a common problem with particular chassis designs of that generation. I found the IR receiver board replacement part number and already ordered it. $12 for the damn thing, plus another $7 for shipping of course.

Certain credit cards will also extend warranties for an extra year, but sounds like you've already got a fix in the works

I never buy extended warranties on anything and I carry very high deductables on vehicles and house insurance. I guarantee you I have saved many thousands of dollars over my lifetime even if I occasionally had to pay for a repair myself.

This.

I used to work for a major electronics retailer. 90% of all extended warranties are pure profit because the consumer will never need/use them, or the parts will break beyond the warranty. Waste of fucking money IMO (and every major consumer reporting group will agree with me)

The one thing I have found that IS worth the money is replacement plans. These are for smaller items like portable media devices and such. I consider myself to be very careful with my stuff, but shit still happens when you're carrying things around constantly. I think I got WAY more than my $20 worth out of one MP3 player I bought. I must have replaced that thing 5 times for stuff that the normal warranty wouldn't have covered.

Fixed. Took 15 minutes, and about $20. We will see how long this part lasts.
