#4354, "Any computer experts here? Building a new system, need suggestions."

I am thinking about putting a new computer together. The last time I built a computer was around 2001, so i'm currently running :

AMD 2200(?) 1.57Ghz
geforce 5900XT ultra
768mb of DDR 333
Epox mb(old)

The only thing I upgraded between now and then was the ram and graphics card which was about two years ago. I'm looking to build a decent machine that will last me 3-4 years. I'm currently looking at this setup:

AMD 3700+ San Diego - $213 or 3500+ ClawHammer - $203
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce SPP 100 ATX AMD Motherboard - $224
OCZ 2GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 Dual Channel Platinum - $199
Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 - $154
eVGA 256-P2-N517-AX Geforce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 - $314

I read about the new AMD AM2 chip that should be coming out around June/July. My question is should I purchase the current system I'm looking at(any revisions/suggestions are welcome), or should I wait for the AM2 to come out. I'm not in any real rush, just bored with my current system so I don't mind waiting until June, or even longer if something more advanced is coming out.

that's all good, if you want to pay that much.
but if you're going to run one 74g raptor, you might as well throw in another and run raid striping configuration. Then, take the old computer and throw in a 400gig drive, load your favorite linux distrubtion, crank up samba and you'll have a nice, reliable file server.

yeah but isnt that HD a little too much? You can get some really good deals for a huge HD for much less.

I think by choosing that, he's going for speed and not capacity. which is why i suggested the file server for mp3s/movies emoji

shoot, i have been running the same setup for almost 7 years now. My computer is really old!

I have a AMD 700, 15 GB HD, 64 graphics card, basic sound card with 128 megs of ram. I have updated the HD to a 80GB, the graphics card to a 128, and the ram is now up to i think 384 megs. It is a old gateway 2000 computer. It still does the job for me lol. I want to get a new one, but everywhere I look they want to much to build one for me, I just dont want to do it myself lol.

Ive always built my own computers..... up until last time, I just didnt feel like doing it. So I got a HP Pavilion a1210n from best buy and I'll never make that mistake again. I mean I got a bargin on the computer, but it took me about 5 hours to completely remove all "free bonus software" and the shitload of spyware installed.

Since I bought Ive upped it to 2GB of RAM and dropped in a BFG OC 6800 GT and overcocked the shit out of it. it handles everything I throw at at and my old P4 is my file server (using WinXP with shared folders lol)
