I don't generally follow the Academy Awards because they're - for the most part - predicable and dumb. Best Actor/Actress always goes to whomever plays the most underprivileged/abused character. For that reason, that godawful monstrosity "Precious" will probably clean house.

Best Picture, on the other hand, is something I can wrap my head around.

I think everyone here has seen Avatar by now (if not, you should, and in 3D). It's being marketed as the most successful movie in history, although that figure is based on dollars generated, not ticket sales, in which case "Gone With The Wind" still trumps all.

Avatar was a cool flick, but mostly for the 3D and, imo, awesome future machines. The Dances with Wolves Meets the Smurfs vibe was all too obvious for me.

District 9
This movie was WAY cool. I thought the South African characters and accents were refreshing and there was humor throughout the film, even though there was a similar message to Avatar. I liked the documentary style of it and look forward to a sequel, whether that's literally in 3 years or just presented as if 3 years have passed since the first one ended.

The Hurt Locker.
Really hope this one wins. Just happened to rent it from Netflix this week. What an outstanding movie. It follows a bomb squad around Iraq as they get called to the scene to diffuse/destroy IEDs. It's like Jarhead, but without the goofy humor.

Hurt Locker presents a new perspective on war movies. I hope that most people today can recognize that soldiers who spend all that time in a war zone, exposed to violence and a very real risk of being killed every day, likely come home and find the little things we deal with back home to be trivial and unimportant. Now imagine if the soldiers spend a year in a war zone taking apart live bombs.

Pretty cool.

Anyone else have any ideas? What do you think about the Oscars?

Avatar was definitely a pretty cool flick, but I agree, this can mostly be attributed to the futuristic machines and amazing CGI. If you have 20 mins to spare, check out this guys review on YouTube. It's pretty funny and has a lot of truth to it. He does it in two parts, so I'll paste both links below in order.

I counldnt watch more then 30secs of District 9.....i regret copying it! Its a total waste of even my dog's time!

District 9 was cool and somewhat graphic but I enjoyed it. It was pretty funny too.

Avatar was awesome. Great effects and story line. It did remind me Americas history when we moved west and starting pushing the Indians off the land.

Inglorious Bastards was an enjoyable movie. I thought it was better than most movies that have come out lately.

Avatar was incredible. I've watched it over and over. I already have plans on how to incorporate LEDs into my backyard someday, to make bioluminescent plants, haha.

District 9 was, eh, a copy of Alien nation + random video games (like duke nukem). I'd rather play Duke Nukem.

I agree with terry about District9, but middle to the end is the best. The news journalist becomes an Alien from the canister, govt. use him as their defense against the invaders but it backfires.

Avatar, was pretty cool. It reminds me of Dances With Wolves,Sean Connery Medicine man with scfi cgi's. Reason why I say Dances with Wolves is because the solider learns from the Indians and becomes one.
