If you want to make drum tracks you could try Reason. It's not cheap but I haven't heard of anything better what it comes to digital synths. Of course, if you want to record like the big boys you would need Pro Tools, but that is a only on the Mac OS, and I know how you guys feel about that. The link below has a list of software. I have ordered from BSW before and they are great. Good luck with everything.

I use Reason. 2.5 is good enough for me, but 3.0 has some alluring features for big layered synth stuff that would be a lot of fun if you wanted to do some Dream Theatre or Muse-type tunes..
edit: i don't really like his recording style, straight from a pedal to the comp? eehhh ...my amp is what makes me like my sound. plus his pedal isn't quite good enough to simulate an amp good enough to get that real natural sound in a recording using just the straight line out.

I agree. I only watched the beginning of his video and I know his technique was wrong. It's good for a cheap, and easy setup but it's going to sound like it. A decent I/O interface isn't that expensive so if you have any plans of making music that sounds good you should look into one.

haha yea that was my first impression too...
i think the part where he said "and that goes in to my computer's line in"... couldn't tell if it was at least a sound card and not on board audio. *shudder*
i think i'm gonna get a m-audio firewire 1814 for my home recording stuff. i like the flexibility of bein able to use it for portable recording as well. just need a laptopt that's up to par. i figure if you jsut recrd w/ the laptop and do all your mixing/editing on the desktop you should be fine though. it's got 2 built in phantom powered inputs plus a litepipe for adding additional mics. plus midi i/o too.
my mobo is pre-pciX/pci-e and the pci sound card market is pretty much dead already. its prolly another year or so off til the audio market stats putting out cards again anyways.

my neighbors would get mad if i tried to record with my 100w (tube) marshall here. lol. but yea nothing's gonna compare to mic'ing a nice sounding amp. esp not with a pedal like that..

Anyone know of a good program to mix drum tracks? I use sonar3 to record everything and the drums sound like ass, they sound to electronic and fake. I'd like to be able to mix tracks instead of having to record on my friends set.

are you talkin 'bout recording a live drum set or a good synth program? if your talking about live recording sucks it's prolly your mics if anything. mic selection/placement makes all the difference. usually a pair of overhead pencil condenser mics and a nice large diapram condenser mic down low for bass kicks is good for starters.

I don't run anything at the moment. This is what I go to school for so I have studio time on their equipment. If I was going to build a setup I would use something similar to that M-Audio, but I wouldn't need the MIDI connection because I can't stand that stuff. I have done two semesters of MIDI work and it bothers me so bad.
If you are trying to make decent beats/music then learning how to mic a drum set it worth it. But, it's not easy at all. You can set up one day and have it sound fine, and then the next have it sound horrible. It's all in the placement and the mics you use. If you are just messing around then try to find some software. Are you windows or Mac based? I can't find stuff for you until I knwo your OS.

windows based. i've mostly been using cubase sx. (mostly 2.0 but just downloaded 3.0 tonite to mess with). i'm gonna try out steinbergs drum stuff too and see how it works with cubase. i haven't really messed with midi at all aside from helpin w/ scoring and arranging music stuffs back at my high school. i actually haven't really done much drum micing - mostly just guitar (eletric and acoustic).

I'm looking to build a small recording suite, but not living at home and moving from room to room every year makes it hard. Now that I am getting a more permenant situation I'm thinking of putting together a package like this.
Mini disc player/recorder- my favorite way to record sounds in the field is on my portable MD so I want something to play back and mix in. http://www.bswusa.com/proditem.asp?item=MD350
This of course runs into my Mac. As of right now it would run off my PowerBookG4, but I would look into one of the G5's if I wanted to do it right. I would run Protools because I really don't know anything else at this point, and I don't want to "water down" my mind as my professors put it.

I'm looking for a good synth program. Its alot of trouble to go set up everything at my friends house to record 1 or 2 drum tracks. I want a program to create tracks that sound like actual drums, because like I said the drums in sonar3 sound like crap. I guess maybe I need to break down and buy a set of my own, but then I'll have to buy mics and everything to.

well i'll let you know how the steinberg groove stuff sounds. should be done downloading by the time i get home tonite. we'll see how my first attempts at drum tracks goes. it's pretty impressive how good the high end synths sound now days...

lol actually i was reading up on it more and i think the groove agent thing is just a big library of premade grooves. blah. haha oh well should still be fun to play with. looks like i'm in the same boat lookin for a good drum program. i've heard the samples with Kontakt and they sound really good. that was only playing off a score for concert band music though so i'm not sure how the samples are for drum beats an stuff. bah so much to learn.

bah couldn't get groove agent to work. i did get a working version of frooty loops though. pretty neat program but the samples suck. i'm downloading the Kontakt libraries now. that's prolly one've the highest end perc synth libraries out there. i'm pretty sure i can just use those in fruity loops or run it through a midi sequencer in cubase or something. fruity loops is fun to play with though. i definately recommend trying it out.
