#42326, "Should I join the Navy? "

I'm strongly considering joining the Navy.
My family's beginning to be disappointed by me and work is very hard to find right now.

If someone with a bit of U.S. Navy experience could help out, that would be great. I'm interested in using the four years to either learn a skill for civilian work or decide to reenlist, which I would definitely consider doing.

Why join? Why not? What should I expect?

These were my thoughts exactly. Ultimately, this is a decision YOU must make.

That's good advice, right there^^

Its "I'm a man" time. You make your decisions on wether or not YOU are disappointed with yourself (which I suspect is partially true, in that you are disappointed about your current direction in life - as opposed to others being disappointed).

I will tell you one thing, there were some awfully confused and misdirected people that I know, who went into the service and they came out very confident and focused.

Listen to him, he's right.

Go to your local recruiter and ask him questions they'd be happy to answer them. You don't have enlist rigt away but he might ask when you like to enlist.

Have you looked into temporary employment agencies.

Don't think he was looking for "Join / Don't Join!". He's looking for insight into what the armed forces are all about. I never enlisted, but I know some people here have, so give the kid some info!

Are you also wanting know if you able keep your 2g in storage while in basic and have it when you return home. Like would I get a sign up money if someone enlists and the storage fee for 13 weeks while at basic etc..

Not sure about this, but I would to know also.

I do work with a guy that just came back from basic from national guard, he did mention something to someone about getting money when enlisted.

When someone enlists do they give money prior to basic or is it within first weeks of basic. Also, has anyone put their car into a storage unit while in basic or deployed.

A relative of mine asked me but I haave no idea thought I'd ask others who are in. He's thinking about marines or national Guard.

This infomation might help this guy out too, maybe.

Alot of what these guys say is true. I just did 6 years in the Navy myself and am now going to school full time. While all branches have jobs that make for excellant civilian jobs. My honest opinion is that the Navy and Air force have more technical jobs that's transfer over. Do not join the service for someone else. I enlisted for myself and no one else. I loved what I did and got alot from my time in. I decided not to stay in or my own personal reasons but would have been happy staying in as well.
