#41636, "Oh snap! The saga beings again..."

This hasn't been the greatest of weeks so far. Been a fairly long week for me. I pick up my sub and old sub amp from my grandmother's intending on seeing if they still work. I make it about 1/2 mile from her house and my car backfires hard in first gear at about 3000 rpms. Stalls out and dies. I was already in the process of shifting. I manage to safely coast into a gas station parking lot.

All I can think is that was pretty weird followed immediately by what is that smell? Pop the hood and smoke is pouring out of the intake and EGR valve.

What's wrong with this picture?

3.5 years and about 53k miles on this belt. For those that remember.

http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=60&topic_id=8584&mode=full

This is now the second time I have had this happen. I am going to be thinking about stepping over to the dark side. There is a 95 TSI AWD here in town with a new a & b t-belt, springs, new shocks, and exhaust for $3k. Bone stock motor. No MBC.

If I pick up the AWD car, I will not be selling the 2gnt. I'll just fix it and enjoy having a nice daily driver with A/C and a nice radio.

I may change my mind in the morning though. I'm just really pissed off right now.

Suck.

Scary thing, though. Weren't the 95 turbo cars most prone to the crankwalks? Or were there some 6-bolt 95s rolling around? Might be worth spending a little time in the FAQ to be sure.

Risky business, either way.

Could be worse. You could have woke up in your own bed with Dino...

97s were the most prone to crankwalk. Any car can get it though. The guys who suffer from it notice signs before hand. The clutch engagement getting weird on hard turns is the easiest way to check though.

Crankwalk is just poor tolerances on the thrust bearing between cylinders 2 and 3. Easily fixed by replacing the bearing with a proper size.

Ha speaking of that I went to help a friend pick up a 95 RS that he was planning on building for his GF. Well he was going to pay $500 and it was running, well before we went to get it the guy said it just quit running and if he still wanted it he would sell it for $200. We get there and there is no timing belt cover and what do I see? A shop rag IN the timing belt, the guy said he drove for 3 months with it in there. we get it home pull out the rag and it starts well it runs for a minute and the rest of the shop rag that I couldnt get out shot up and it jumped time 4 teeth. We did throw a new belt on and it runs great now. I dunno how it didnt bend valves.

Anyway I really dont know whats up with timing belts lately between me and people I have helped I have changed 6 in the past 4 months or so.

4 teeth at the cams is just a tooth too far to keep it from running but not far enough to cause fights inside the engine.

Not working on the car tonight. Need to move some stuff off the carport. It's raining hard and has been all day. Can't do much right now. Will see if tomorrow is drier.

Until then, placing order with PD for parts.

Timing belt parts ordered from PD. Going to pull the head today. Will take photos. This time I think pictures of how to do timing while the motor is in the car will be a nice addition to the Wiki.

I also want photos of the carnage caused by my belt break. Hopefully I will update everything tonight.

Understood. I may say screw it and do a T-belt once a year as maintenance and replace the water pump every two. $150 for peace of mind will be worth it IMO. Especially since I can now do a t-belt in an afternoon.

If I can find the camera. Head is still on the car right now. Didn't feel like pulling the motor mount today.

In its current state, I can show what needs to be pulled better. There are some things you can't get a camera to shoot when everything is assembled.

Installation is reverse of removal. I need to quit losing the damn camera.

Maybe for the timing belt you can just add some pics to this;

http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=Timing%20Belt%20Replacement

But what I have been hearing is requests for pulling and reinstallation of the head. Would certainly be a welcome addition to the Wiki (and you could just link it up to the previous link for timing belt. Thus just needing to do a write up from the timing belt off and up)

So it has been raining all week and I haven't been able to do much with the car. Head over the my grandmother's tonight to find the cat's knocked all my tools over on the floor. Pick stuff up and get irritated. Finally get the car jacked up so I can remove the crank pulley.

Slowly working the jaw puller and bam! The jaw puller pops off the crank pulley. No big deal right? Nope. The crank pulley said "Fuck you Clay!" I now have a good sized chunk that has been broken off. It just gave up. Same jaw puller that I used last time. Same everything.

Now I guess I am going to drill and tap the crank pulley and try to pull the crank pulley off that way. Any other suggestions?

did you use the side of the claws that have a larger surface area grabbing point? you can flip the sides around. One side has small teeth, the other, larger. always use the larger.

i know that doesn't help your current issue, but see if you can get the teeth to grab on to another point. I think this has happened to other members on this board. search around, youll find out what they did. I remember reading somewhere here about it.

damn, thats sucks. If you have or know someone with a welder, weld a bolt to it and try getting it out this way. This would be a second method besides drill and tap.

Hell, if it's already trash, I'd use a rotary tool to cut through the 3 arms. Then throw the outer piece away, and put the puller on what's left of the three arms sticking out of the center piece. If all else fails, you could then use the rotary tool to carefully make a slit in one side, or maybe cut a groove big enough for the puller to rest in where it's broken.

Project 2.4/Big ass turbo now underway....
