This man needs AMERICAN health care. Don't mind the whole "Scottish" thing. They're obviously filthy liars that steal American badass-ness.

Careful. Over 1% of Americans have already signed that thing and we all know how effective online petitions can be. Mind your tone, son.

I'm not following this issue as closely as I would like. At the same time, I'm kinda glad. From what I hear, there's enough conservative psychos out there spreading socialist bullshit fearmongering, which is clouding the issue. Even so, given the recent cash for clunkers program, it's unlikely that there is jack shit anyone with half a brain in this country will be able to do to prevent the gravy train rolling right on through with those spinning, biscuit wheels.

America is not a true democracy, we are a representative republic which is a form of democracy but there is a difference.

About the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government."
"A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury."

See:
Wall Street bailout
GM/Chrysler bailout
Mortgage bailout
Cash for Clunkers
(pending) Centralized Healthcare

"From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship."

Very likely a charismatic, religious nutjob who can rally the far right (which is consistently armed, fuck all), will materialize from somewhere in the "Bible Belt," and rise to power under the guise of "cleaning up our communities."

Initially, the prospect will be an appealing vision of the way things used to be, but while the characteristically uninformed and irresponsible American public at large envisions white picket fences and pastoral scenes from back when cars only cost a nickel, history will be taking a much larger step back... say, 300 years back.

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years"

"During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1. from bondage to spiritual faith;
2. from spiritual faith to great courage;
3. from courage to liberty;
4. from liberty to abundance;
5. from abundance to complacency;
6. from complacency to apathy;
7. from apathy to dependence;
8. from dependence back into bondage"

Of course, none of this will ever happen. It's such a far out, crazy idea, right? Before anything even remotely like this would happen, somebody would do something.

Yeah. Somebody.

Just to let you know, in Canada you do choose you own doctor, and can for the most part choose your own hospital. There are privite health clinics where you can go and pay for health care yourself and get treatment right away if you like, althought if you need sergery asap, then you will get it right away at a government run hospital. The wait times are not as bad as most people think. ive broken arms and had a cast on in a few hours, without any money out of my own pocket.

Thank you mobil one for rust proofing my driveway.

What if you are 80, need cancer treatment, but otherwise you are in excellent health?

I was thinking more like Gtab (handle on another forum) that waited for 18 months to have back surgery. If the Canooks were so good with healthcare, why do the rich come to the US for care? For that matter if 'free' care is so good, why does anyone come to the US for care and not go to other countries?

im not going to say that our system is perfect, and im not going to argue about it being better then what you have in the u.s, as i have never lived there so it would be a biased opinion and not based on facts. I will say that it is better then what most people who have not lived in Canada give it credit for, I'm sure the guy you mentioned is not the only one that has had to wait for health care, but i have never experenced anything like that myself. A guy i work with needs sergery on his back, they found this out about a month or so ago, and he goes in next week.

Thank you mobil one for rust proofing my driveway.
