I put my 91 S-10 up for sale about 2 months ago, and got alot of interested buyers, my sisters boyfriends dad and one of my friends in particular. My friend has been wanting it since I got it, but didn't have the money at the time. My sisters boyfriends dad offered me $300 less than my asking price, and at the time, no one else was actually willing to commit to the sale, so I agreed to sell it to him. I received a text from my friend today, unaware I already told someone else they could buy it, saying that he just applied for a loan to get the truck, so I'm like oh shit, now what do I do? My friend is willing to pay my original asking price, and take it as-is, while my s/b/d wants me to finish wiring up the power windows, door/dash panels and headliner, which he provided the material for and which I just finished covering last night. I haven't received any money down from either person, and I couldn't tell my friend to go retract the loan, so I'm kinda in a bind right now, who should I sell it to? My friend really needs another vehicle, his car is literally falling apart, my s/b/d just wants it to use every now and then. If I do sell it to my friend(IF his loan goes through), it's really going to piss off my mom and dad because they're friends with my s/b/d, but I've known my friend since 2nd grade and have always been there for him. Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

If you already committed the sale to s/b/d you need to man up and tell your friend the situation, especially if s/b/d has provided materials for you to finish a few things. You can't feel obligated to sell it to your friend for simply that if you already agreed with somebody who has your respect.

To me it sounds like your buddy assumed he could just go get a loan and say hey I wanna buy this without checking with you prior to see if you had made a sale yet. You also could have let him know that you were selling it to s/b/d to keep him in the loop.

The longer you wait around to make a decision the more ugly its gonna get.

Man take it as a lesson learned. Never do business with family or friends. And if you decide to do business with them, try your best to treat it as you would with any other person who comes along to buy something off of you. When I sold my Honda last summer I had a lot of people interested but I made it clear to everyone that the car was up for grabs unless someone put up at least a half deposit. And finally when some kid came with half the cash I made him sign papers stating how much he had dropped off and by when he had to pay the rest. I also put in writing that his deposit was non-refundable to make sure he didn't play any games with me. We both had signed copies and everything went smooth with no B.S.

Also I gotta go with the last post about you manning up to your agreement. If you already took material from your s/b/d to make repairs then the car is basically "Sold" to him.

when selling to friends/family/online i never consider a verbal agreement as sold, people can always fall through or string it out forever.
i always take non-refundable money in hand as an agreement (or 3rd party escrow for LARGE purchases). either half down for smaller stuff under a grand, or $500 for something over a grand.

this makes people sure they are committed to the sale plus it gets you some insurance in case they decide to back out.


so the guy gave you some material to finish. whats to keep him from backing out after that or coming up with some other thing for you to do before he buys it?

IMO he he comes up with money first gets it. stick to your guns and set the line as its YOUR sale, YOUR rules.

Well, first off, thank you everyone for the responses, they really helped. I figured out my problem. Going to sell it to my s/b/d. I did make an agreement and already used materials he provided. I talked to my friend about it and explained everything, he wasn't to happy, but I am going to try and work something out with my boss to get him a good deal on a car/truck from work. I have learned something from all this though, next time I won't be in this kind of situation that's for sure.

who needs a loan for an 18 year old s-10? LOL And what bank would give it?
