#37358, "Thinking of getting a tattoo"

Hey guys, I am thinking of getting a small tattoo right below my shoulder blade. It will just be black text. I'm not sure exactly what it will say yet, but it will be a philosophy quote (I'm a philosophy nerd). Anyway, my question for you guys who have tattoos is, how do I know I won't regret this in 10 years?

That's the real trick. I'd think real long and hard about it. Make sure it has some kind of meaning that will stick with you for the REST OF YOUR LIFE.

Make sure you don't bring your woman when your getting inked. He could fuck up your design, by thinking he's gonna give your woman a tat also. This happend to me when I got my first. I do plan on getting more.

That's fucking retarded and you need to research the shop/artist before you go.

You don't. If you have to ask that question then maybe you need to sit on your tattoo idea a bit longer. Stick to piercings if you're being indecisive. Personally....fuck it. My left arm is a semi-tribal-ish design I drew that covers 3/4 of said arm. I also have "pip pip cheerio" written in plain text on the underside of my right forearm. Eyebrow and lip are pierced as well.

Yes, before you ask, it has had a negative impact on some interviews. It's a fact of life.

Duh, I did that. My reply just went over your head.

Reason why I said DO NOT take your woman. Is because I took my wife to a very well known local shop, when I was getting a yinyang on my left she said she wanted a tat on boob. The tat artist got f'n excited and shit, he then F'd up my tat. She admit that she said that on purpose, so he could mess it up.

I wanted a tat when I turned eighteen but I thought long about it 10 yrs that is.

If you know someone or have a relative works at shop, have them do it. Most will let you bring the sketch of what you want done.

Its best to get a tatoo that nobody has or haven't seen before. Makes it that more meaning you. Never get your spouses name you'll jenx your relationship.

It's funny that you think you're special. First of all, "well known shop" doesn't mean they crank out quality work. Did you bother comparing portfolios or even talking to the artist before even making an appointment? You know what? Never mind, I already know the answer. Secondly, tattoo artists see more tits, pussy and ass in a year than you'll ever in your entire life. Your overweight ex wife's fat sacks were nothing special. You didn't research the artist. You got shitty work done and deserved it. So no, your response didn't go over my head. You just proved how big of a moron the vast majority of us already thought you were.

Mystery solved.

Idiot.

Edit: It's spelled "jinx" you god damn window licker.

I agree.

Only get a tattoo if it means something to YOU. Not your GF, wife, dad, brother, etc. Shit happens.

I have two. One of each shoulder blade. Both Kanji symbols, Loyalty on the left and Devotion on the right. Because they mean something to me.

Im getting another on my lower leg, probably a Indian skull in headdress. My grandfather who passed away a few years ago, loved Indians, so this would be for him. Or just a design.

I was thinking "γνῶθι σαυτόν", the inscription above the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, which means "Know Thyself" in Greek. Its the basis of the philosophies of many of the great classic thinkers such as Socrates.

Whatever floats your boat. Just do your research in both the text and the shop you go to.

I have 5 currently with the oldest one going on 9 years. No regrets as long as you find something that holds importance to you - as stated above.

Word of warning too, they are addictive.

I have a few tattoos. One I wish I did a bit more research on now though. On my calf I have a tattoo with my last name, (in case I forget maybe) I love the piece, but I wish I had it done on another font. My family is predominately Irish, I have an Irish last name. I being a dumbass have my Irish name tattooed in an old english script. I didnt realize it until about an hour after it was done.

Other than that, I can only make two suggestions, The first is to wait, keep waiting. If a year goes by and you still want it. yeah then its probably something that you wont regret later.

The other is, never get a tat unless it can be covered buy a T-shirt. you dont know what life brings. Perception is reality, in general the public views tattoos as something that shows criminal tendencies, poor character. It sucks but thats the truth.

I love all my ink and I will be getting more.

I'm still inkless and I'm 26.. I've floated a few ideas since I was 18, but nothing has stuck.. therefore I feel I have still made the right choice. If it's something you have considered a long time, and means something deep/profound to you now.. give it a few years and it might not. People are right, you never know where life decides to take you, or where you decide to take your life. You might get fed up with your run of the mill job, go to school for professional school, only to realize you can't get a job regardless of your credentials due to one spot of ink on your arm you can't cover in a shirt. I don't feel like I'm attatched enough to anything long enough to carry it with me for the rest of my life.

I have two, although only one is visible, lol. I regret them both. The first one was when I was 18, stupid, and in love. It was my first wife's name, Ilene. Well ten years after the divorce I finally got sick of seeing it in the mirror everyday and every girl I was with since asking "Do you still love her", so I covered it with another one. It's a black panther on a branch on my right bi-cep. When I was 28 it looked great-big growling cat on my 17" gun. Now I'm 53, arms considerably smaller, and it looks like a sucked up little pussy squatting on a twig! My advice: Don't do it, lol. At the very least get more opinions and give it VERY careful consideration. Good luck!
