so i have been thinking and researching on what car i would like to get as a graduation gift to me in a year and half from now. something economical, not too expensive, good MPGs, has looks and decent power. i have been pretty much focused on the VW gti mkv (5). 2.0 turbo 200hp and 207 ft lb torque all for 22 grand, not too shabby. my friend has one and after letting me drive it around i was quite impressed. it has good pick up, sounds nice, interior is well done and the room in the back seat is exceptional. outside he has a lip and is lowered about an inch, and that alone made it look so much cooler. so after reading more on this on various forums and road test...i come across this. The soon to come GTI-R MKVI (6). estiamted 265 AWHP... if VW is smart and goes through with this in production AND sends it to the U.S. and gives it a 6spd manual....I AM SOLD! linky http://www.leftlanenews.com/details-emerge-on-next-gen-vw-gti-harder-edged-gti-r.html

edit: course im keeping the 2gnt..can not part ways with her ever. no matter how i look at that slut.. which has given me heart aches, sweat and tears...i still love her dammit emoji

I'm curious to know which vehicle you will spend more time working on. If you get a Vdub, try and get one of the ones made in Germany and not Brazil.

haha true. but from what ive been reading, the current GTI is very reliable. my friend has 65k on her 06 and only had to get it serviced once due to a faulty window motor. she also hits the drag strip like twice a month in it. she also burned up the clutch but of course that has to do with the drag racing/burnouts. as far as modding it, thats what the 2g is for, at least until the warranty is up emoji

My 1st car was a VeeDub and I still would get another old school 16v. Vdubs are a lot of fun and the community is only 2nd to the DSM community when it comes to cohesiveness. They by far have more get togethers and big time shows/races but IMO the Shootout is tops. I'm still a member on VWVortex and lurk around there once in a while to see what's going on with the old MKII's and the crazy stuff they are doing with them. They are well made cars (granted you get a real german one) but upkeep can be as pricey as an Audi.

one word. DON'T

I work at a vee dub dealer (amongst audi, volvo, mazda and hyundai too) they come back for more maintenance work than I could ever imagine. your friend is lucky only having her window regulator go bad (it wasn't the motor, they NEVER go bad) hell, they can't get break light switches right (3rd recall going out) or ignition coils that work properly (part # supercessions start with an A suffix, they're on R)

I wouldn't own a newer VW if you paid me to right now

They should come with a lifetime supply of lights - I have yet to see one with both tail/brake light operational at the same time..
